Hi all. I am about to try my first attempt at growing and am just posting this so other first timers and vets can follow my progress. I ordered a fairly cheap starter kit ($30) from mycomonster and it comes with: 1 - Growing chamber, a high quality, durable Rubbermaid(lol) latch top clear plastic bin. 6 - Proven formulated STERILIZED and SEALED substrate jars, with vermiculite, brown rice flour and over 30 other ingredients, including protein addatives and SPAWNMATE! Sealed jars are less likely to pick up contaminants on the journey to your place and have a much longer shelf life. 1 - New, high quality adjustable sprayer. A must for controlling humidity.(lol:high quality ADJUSTABLE SPRAYER!!!) 1 - Thermometer / hygrometer combo to let you know what the temperature and humidity are in your growing chamber. 1 - Gallon bag of perlite for humidification purposes. 1 - 6 ounce bag of vermiculite, used for double ended casing, greatly increases output of the substrate jars. 1 - Pair of vinyl gloves, that will aid in reducing contamination if used properly. 12 - Hand cut filter discs, to be placed over the top of the jar once you have punctured the lids. (pic of kit at link below) I also ordered 2 syringes of Cub b+ and 1 of Treasure Coast from Hawks Eye. Has anyone ordered from that site? Any way, I dont have access to a PC, so Ill be usin the boiling method. And all I will have is what comes in the kit. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Well, Ive been thinking about only boiling the jars and just nuking the substrate.Luckily the kit comes with 6 jars that are already full of substrate. Also, I have bought 12 1 pint jars and was wondering that since they were a full pint, if i could split the cakes in half.

pints are no good for pf tek using brf. you need half pints for those. i would recommend that you use whole grain if you are going to be using jars of that size. def get a pressure cooker. steaming works, but the pc is way better. d

I would have to disagree with you brink. You can do pints with brf but it will take you longer. And for him doing whole grains it is a good idea. But you have to remember without a PC he will get all contams with grain.

With that kit the jars already come sterilized, just like your description says. You shouldn't need to sterilize them yourself, unless you are reusing the kit. I know people that have ordered that kit and the mushrooms are no "monsters". They are the same as any other pf jars. I think that all the stuff they say they put in the mix is BS.
