No it is not normal for you to be getting water dripping out of the sides. if it is properly sealed all pressure should be released through the rocker.
1) yes some peeps do use pint jars, some quart jars. 2) it is a possibility that too much water was added but i still don't think that would cause it to leak out the sides.
How high did the water come on the jars before you closed it up?

My 4 qt Mirro says to use 1.5 qts of water when 'canning,' which, in my understanding is what is effectively being done with pf style jars. I would say that since my 4 qt calls for 1.5 qts of water, your 8 qt should have no problem with 3 cups of water. In fact, the original manufacturer's instructions caution against too little water as being dangerous.
Sounds like your gasket might be bad. Is this a vintage PC or a new one?

i think the qt jars are too big..my pc is a mirro also and i can only use qt if i lay it down..and then only one will fit..i can stick 4 half pints under and do a qt at the same time...or 4 pts or 8 half pints..i need a bigger pc and it sounds like you might want one too hahahaha..hope this helps bro

water content sounds ok, so it must not be sealed properly if it is leaking anywhere around the sides. it should not leak at all. no water drips no steam, nothing. yeah no sense in using pints if you are going to use them for spawn. quarts=more spawn per jar sure, with a slight amount longer of colonization. it is all just a personal preference with different people.
good luck to ya peace

Without the jars it was about an inch, with the jars it was about 3.5inches of water. Still a good 3 inches from the top.
I couldn't really feel any pressure leaks, steam wasn't coming out the sides like the manual talks about. Just water was dripping down onto the stove.
I got this PC brand new figuring it would handle quart jars, pints seem like a lot more work especially when in the end they are just going to be mixed together and cased.
Thanks for the reply
I have the exact same PC as you do. 8q mirro...and let me tell you, it is better than any AA I have ever seen j/k.
hehe anyway...it sounds like you have too much water in there.
I have done quart jars in mine as well. the water content should be about 1.5" at most with the jars in them. about 1" without.
3.5" with the jars in it, sounds like a bit much.
basically I just put my jars in first, then fill with water and use a ruler until it is at 1" marker. 1.5" at most.
Go ahead and try that first, then if you are still having problems with the water comming out of the sides, check to make sure you sealed it correctly. If everything else is checked, it is probably a problem with your seal.
