Brown rice flour casing mix... would this work?
    #4500387 - 08/05/05 02:17 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I've got 7 PF cakes. If I get a container, put a layer of moist vermiculite on the bottom, then put crushed cakes on top, then sterilize mix moist vermiculite and brown rice flower and put it on top and put a lid on, would this work? Would perlite be needed anywhere?

:mushroom2:  NO!!!  Never put nutes in your casing soil.  Not only will it overlay, it'll contam.  The casing soil's purpose is to create an ideal environment for your shrooms.  The substrate is the nute, the casing protects the nutes from contams.  :mushroom2:

Well I hear cakes run out of nutrients fast... so whats the purpose of a casing mix after the cakes are colonized and putting it on top... why not just fruit the cakes themselves?
(I'm not argueing, I'm honestly just wanting to know the facts so I don't f*** up.)

:mushroom2:  Casing your substrate creates an ideal environment for the formation of mushrooms.  Yes, you will eventually run out of nutes in your cakes, but by then you will have pulled in a decent harvest.  You can fruit the cakes by themselves, but you will get a better flush if you case.  If you have any more questions or aren't sure what to do, go to the FAQ's and check your tek that you are using also.  :mushroom2:

Because mushrooms are 92% water. Have to get it somewhere. A casing layer is a great source of moisture.

You definately don't want to have nutes in your casing layer, or you will get massive overlay.  If you want a little bit more colonization on your casing layer, try using coco coir, it has a lil bit of nutes in it, but be weary of overlay  I think your best bet is peat/verm with a base like limestone flour.

By the time the overlay has arrived the contaminants would be there already id wager - aspergillus (common green mold) can germinate from spore in 32 hours.
