Outdoor beds and Centipedes?
    #4511367 - 08/08/05 06:09 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I made an outdoor bed recently with 8lbs of poo/straw and spawned it with a contaminated mycobag. I saw a little nest of red centipedes (the tiny ones) and they were crawling on a portion of the bed. I poked at them with a stick to try to murder them, and thats how I found out my bed was 100% colonized. So I screwed with the bed and theres a centipede nest on it. I dont know if centipedes are bad for the mycelium but it does put me in concern.

I'm not positive but centipedes are carnivores, they hunt small animals and nibble
there, that and insects... I dont care much for centipedes, I'd scoop them off and
stomp them if it were my bed.

i used to just hand pick them and with a little squeeze they pop. i haven't noticed any other pests hangin out with them there so i quit doin it. they don't seem to bother the shrooms so why mess with them.

Centipedes are a beneficial insect. Don't harm them.

I dont find many pests in australia - only snails and slugs once they begin to fruit.

Beet traps are a good way to get ride of slugs/snails and other bugs... i use a jar with about 8oz beer, put it in the ground until about .5 inch is above the dirt and pull some mulch up around the rest, put them about 4 foot apart and that really takes care of alot of unwanted bugs.....

make sure they are about 10 feet from your patch or it just attracts more to it
