Need advice - caps wont open??
    #4511874 - 08/08/05 10:38 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Ive got 12 cakes in a large clear rubbermaid tub, humidified with the 'poor man's pod' technique. (Geolite rocks, bubble wands and an aquarium airpump). The terrarium prooved too big to be adequately humidified by the geolite/airpump with my A/C running all day, and as a result I was running at ~89% humidity for a while. I resolved this problem by placing a heating pad underneath the terrarium plugged into a timer. With the pad on low, I'm now maintaining an average temp of 77F and a humidity of about 96%, with constant gas exchange.

Well, because of the low humidity conditions many of the cakes got dehydrated. I had them sitting on plastic and they werent in contact with the wet stones.

I had *huge* pinsets, but ended up with a boatload of little abhorts because of the humidity conditions. (of course, I saved them:))

Anyway, now that the humidity is proper, the pins that formed when the humidity was too low have been maturing, but they'll grow maybe 2-5" and the caps wont open. They'll just start turning dark, as if they were abhorting. I've been picking these too.

I have no signs of contamination at all.

Is this a result of the low humidity? Once all the abhorts have been picked off the cake Ive been dunking them for 20 hours and rolling them in casing mix before placing them back in the terrarium.

What could cause the fruits to grow a good amount, and then just abhort?

Thanks,
Zesty

Im wondering if it was the week or so of low RH - perhaps the mycelium just needs time to recover? Im hoping the dunking takes care of things for the next flush.

Interestingly - I had one cake that I thought was a little too dry before the humidity fell off, so I placed it directly on the geolite and now it's got a nice pinset that looks like it might make it to maturity.

Check your light levels.

As in too much light or not enough? They are in a clear plastic tub - could the light comming in from all directions cause a problem?

They've got a decent amount of light...nothing very bright though. The first few fruits came out fine and I havent moved the tub.

are you using a multispore inoculation - if you are doing everything right and it always still happens with this batch it could just be a fucked up phenotype - try agar.

Yeah, BRF/verm and whole brown rice cakes inoculated with spores. They were old spores too - they took forever to colonize but they eventually did.

Well after thinking about it, maybe they *arent* getting enough light. Even with the lights on in the room, where the tub sits is in a very dim spot. From where the cakes are they're only getting dim ambient light - there's no discernable directional source.

I have 2 1pt cakes cased, in a separate bin in a more well lit area that are doing outstanding - the surface is literally *covered* with pins.

I took a small desk lamp and placed it over by the tub. Ill post back with the results.

Zesty
