Basketball!

ive just started playing in past few months after being inspired by the NBA finale game. Watching the players (particularly Ginobli) dance on that court was mesmerizing and I felt I got a glimpse of the discipline and skill required for such a game.
ive felt a communication with my body while learning dribbling techniques, as well as developing muscular memory with each of the manuevers and shots.
i see the goal as to achieve a "zen-like" status while playing, body being united with the motion of the ball, to move out of the way of feelings of intimidation or impossibility, flow around your obstacles like water in order to make the score
to me this sport really brings mind and body together for an excellent collaboration, and is very spiritual to me in nature
and then theres all the other great stuff about it: excercise, fresh-air, a challenge, team-work, strategy, opportunity to make friends, and most importantly FUN.

Just remember in real life not to dribble before you shoot...

While you are busy with the thought that it's zen, I move in it, and before you know it, the game is over.

Yes, that's how I lose most games actually... I stop focusing and think to myself:
"Hey! This is Zen!"

The best players lose themselves in the game, the best example being Michael Jordan. The zone is remarkable, it is where a person can almost will the action to manifest in his or her favor on the court. The thing that is so great about basketball is the dynamic of the team. Though it's often looked at as an ego driven sport, a team that plays selflessly will nearly always win.

I get the same kind of feeling in my kayak. Except, its more personal since its just me and the water. Running new rivers where you aren't sure what line you should take through the rapids. Flipping upside down and feeling like your in a wash machine but knowing if you stop and focus that you can flip back up and don't have to swim. Being one with nature, challenging big water, putting your life on the line literally. It gives me great satisfaction.

this is exactly what im talking about. that zone. theres something remarkably beautiful about it. ive only experienced such things with video games, but i think the same reflexive principles apply, physical sports just take a whole lot more discipline because they involve your whole body.

Where I find my zen is in my city park, the most competitive outdoor game in town. On any given night, there is usually 15 to 20 constant guys that play, always one court, winner stays. On Sunday nights in the summer a band plays. The stage is a giant trailer whose back is about 15 feet from the basketball court. I've played in extremely competitive games set to bluegrass, old style ballads, blues, etc. It's a great time.
