    #4505603 - 08/06/05 11:52 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

If i put moist vermiculite on the bottom of a container, then some crumbled cakes, then some more moist vermiculite on the top... would i have to sterilize the vermiculite im using?

I once did a casing where I took some PF cakes that were on their third or fourth flush, crumbled them up, and cased them with unsterilized casing material. I got a few more nice flushes, but then I got a nice green mold contam.

It's not necessary to sterilize the casing, it will work without it. However, you're probably gonna see contams a lot faster.

Sterilizing dry verm = useless.

In theory, verm should be sterile. In real life, shit happens. I have always sterilized my verm even though I don't feel it's absolutely necessary. A lot of time gets put into making sure that everything up to this point is clean and sterile, so why not take the extra step of sterilizing your verm to avoid ANY possibility of it being contamed. Just my 2 cents.

I sterilize the initial layer of verm and got cobweb but it's fixed now. Any patching I do I just mix a tiny bit of H2o2 with the water just to protect the myc as they come up through and keep the contams away. I don't believe it's necessary after that because the myc is pretty strong, but dont quote me on that.
