Invitro Style
    #4509760 - 08/08/05 06:30 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I was considering (just for sh*ts and giggles)  making one of my jars grow invitro.  Can someone point me to some good pieces of reading on the best way to do this?  Not really urgent, just something I'd like to see.  It sounds pretty cool having mushrooms growing inside a jar .

There's not much to it. Just leave the jars closed and expose to light, drop the temps, etc once they are completely colonized. The mushrooms will be flat and conform to the shape of the jars. I have forgotten about jars in a closet before and found mushrooms growing in them weeks later without doing anything to them.

Nice...sounds feasable and will defnitely be easier to lower the temps without bringing multiple casings downstairs to cooler air. How long will the shroom stay fresh once grown? I wouldn't wanna wait until I see a bunch of mushrooms and then pull them out too late and have them all rotted.

When doing invitro, the jars should be exposed to light from the first sign of germination. Just allow the jars to fill up with mushrooms and then harvest. If you start to see a cap that is starting to rot, harvest then.

Indirect sunlight is all you need by the way.

Crap...I guess I'm too late because most of my jars are now 50-95% done.

It's not too late. It's just faster if you start to induce light after germination. They'll still fruit fine at your stage.

You're fine. If you look at the original PF tek on the fungifun website, you'll see that primordia will form in the jar AFTER 100% colonization and they will continue to grow in the jar if left alone.

Lol I just ran up and put it in the light anyway, then came down and read the responses. Thanks guys, and just out of curiosity, have you ever done it this way? How'd it go?

Seems like they'd just be so small that you'd need sooo many jars for a good yeild...

No. Leave the lid on. These bowls are a bit different.
