Newbie- Need Trusting Help for Identifying
    #4509383 - 08/08/05 01:26 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I am a complete newbie to this mushroom hunting- so my identifying skills are terrible. On my hunt today today around 7-8pm, I came across a few groups of mushrooms. They seem to me that they might be Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps), or Panaeolus sphinctrinus, or a look-alike that's not in my field guide book. The field guide I am using is "Hallucinogenic and Poisonous Mushroom Field Guide"- By Gary P. Menser if you are familiar with it. I cannot post photographs of these mushrooms right now, but they will be up soon. The description for these mushrooms are as Follows:

Spore Print: Unknown- for now
Habitat: Terrestrial, growing in normal healthy lawn grass.
Location: Eastern Colorado
CAP-
Size: average 11mm
Shape: Mostly small parabolic and some slightly conic, none are plane
Color: Peak of the Mushroom is brown, the middle of the cap is a lighter brown, and the circumfrance/ margin is a dark brown- nearly black
Surface: Smooth, fleshy,
Margin: slightly Rigid (maybe due to aging), Dark Brown, near black color.
Consistency: Thin and pliant, brittle as it dries
STEM-
Size:Average 5cm and about 1 1/2 to 2 mm thick
Shape: Straight and Equal
Color: Shiny brown
Surface: No Annulus/vail remnants, smooth.
Apex: -
Base: Covered with a white substance- myselium maybe?
Consistency: Hollow, pliable enough to wrap around your finger
GILLS-
Color: Dark Brown
Attatchment: Adnexed
Edge: -
Spacing: Subclose

Great description and topicstart, Bootscraper! Wish we saw this a bit more often around here

To see if they might be liberty caps:
- Is there an apparent nipple?
- Do they bruise blue (check the base of the stem and the cap)? Note: bruising usually is very faint or totally absent in liberty caps. It can still be a tell-tale sign though.
- Can you remove the pellicule from the caps?

In general, it is very difficult to ID LBMs, even if photos are provided, so even with the description you gave, a reliable ID is nearly impossible to establish. Put your photos up ASAP; that'll definitely help!

This is a very good description.
Disclaimer: I am no expert, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

It doesn't seem to me that you got Semilanceata or Sphinctrinus.
It is early for the Liberty Caps to show up. The cap of Semilanceata usually has a umbo, it is viscid, and the margin is striate. Its color changes to light brown as it dries, and the stem doesn't feel hollow.

The Sphincrtunus is usually larger and taller, and the stem breaks easily. You will usually find Panaeolus on dung.

You can try IDing the shroom you have using Menser's key (p24), but in my opinion, the shroom you have is nothing active and may be poisonous. Don't eat it.
Anyway, wait for the print, and for the experts to reply.

Just guessing from the location, and habitat that you found Paneolina feonisecii. The description of the cap doesn't sound like liberty caps, it sounds more like the zonate bands on feonisecii. I don't think Libs ever become parabolic and they usually show a "nipple" or pointed umbo. Both I believe are hygrophanous. Looking forward to pictures.

I wasnt thinking Panaeolina foenisecii at all, but that is possible.
It could be Conocybe, but the parabolic cap makes that unlikely.
Is the cap 11mm diameter?
LBM IDs are indeed very difficult.

Considering the dark belt around the margin and the description of the cap, along with the brown gills, and habitat, Panaeolina foenisecii would be a likely guess.

Yeah thanks for the help, after I posted this last night I tried to do some deeper identifying. You all are right about these LBM's, they are really difficult. I'm almost positive now that these are most definately not liberty caps- these don't show any obvious nipple, and they are too parabolic. I might not be to good at this- but when I attempted to bruise 1 of them, it didn't show any blue(maybe because I didn't do it right?) but the color turned darker. It's too late for me to put up photographs because they have all dried already- bummer. So, I think I will just bury these in the dirt and hope I will have better luck on my next hunt.
Thankyou everybody-
Bootscraper
