Firewall / Popup Blockers
    #4509070 - 08/07/05 11:51 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Can you guys recommend a good FREE Firewall/popup blocker?
I just re-formatted tonight and am looking for something good and spyware free -

Zonealarm is what I'm currently running but I just don't trust it :/

As for a Pop-Up blocker - I've never used one....hence I need a good idea of what to get..

What do you guys use?
:sun:

Use firefox as your internet browser. It has one installed into it. Firefox is like 2000000000000 x better than IE

Get Sygate free edition for your firewall
or Outpost.. some prefer that.. not me
Either way they both have good free firewalls and use a lot less resources than zone alarm

Definitely use Firefox.
and what kind of pop ups do you get?
You might also have spyware too.
get ad-aware and spybot

Firefox browser + PeerGuardian IP blocker
www.methlabs.org for PG
Download all lists, including the Bluetack ones
Among these will be ad and spyware lists
Update them regularly and they will block a tremendous amount of known badcorp IPs.
Thus eliminating the ads from connecting to your computer in the first place. (In most cases)

PeerGuardian

I get every kind of Pop Up imaginable - Really annoying stuff....usually the ones that want to send you files

As for the spy ware - I've only had Windows installed for about 20 minutes - So I'm doubtfull of spyware as of yet..

Firefox - Fucking blows, But I suppose I will have to learn to like it....the userface just gets on my nerves :/

Well, use whatever browser you wish to.

But PeerGuardian is definitely a must for any PC, IMO.

I really appreciate the fact that the accumulation of people over there at Methlabs are so dedicated to protecting privacy. There are just waaaay too many corporations connecting to our PCs that have no reason to be in any case.

Is peer guardian a firewall or just an IP blocking program? Would it fuck up a firewall?

just an IP blocking program.. and no it wouldn't fuck up a firewall
it's a good extra thing to have.. especially if you download from P2P

Thanks for the quick answer ISM - I think I have decided to go with Sygate and Firefox plus that PeerGuardian thing - Can never be too safe, ya know?

I'm going with firefox because it seems that there are no good popup blockers that don't have spyware or some other bullshit added in - With my experience atleast..

well if you have every pop up imagineable.. you are either browsing porn with IE.. or you have at least some spyware. adaware SE is free, and so is spybot.. both very effective programs.
and this is a good tool too - http://www.winpatrol.com/
If you insist on using IE.. get IE spyad

I'd recommend Spybot over Ad-aware.

There have been many of times that Spybot has found things that Ad-aware had missed when running it directly after a full hard drive scan with Ad-aware.

beware, most anti spyware programs and 'pop up blockers' are rip offs that actually are spyware and malware programs themselves.. and often mime adware and spybot names. Ad-Aware and Spybot are completely straight though.. they will mine all that shit out.
Basically if you use firefox (download extensions and themes - you can customize the hell out of it), and are spyware free.. you shouldn't ever get pop ups. Oh, definitely download the Adblock extension for firefox.

and if you want further protection get SpywareBlaster where the others find spyware already on your system.. these prevent it from getting there in the first place.

Also I assume you have an antivirus..

Yeah.. but Spybot finds things that Ad-aware does not sometimes, and vica versa.
The guys at spywarewarrior.com recommend using them both.

Popup blocker: http://toolbar.google.com/ <- that's what I use.

Spyware cleaner: http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php <- click on 'run this program from it's current location' .. When it says to open or save, just click open and you're good to go.

you probably need to disable messenger service.
this is how you do it:

run>type "services.msc" w/o quotations>scroll down to
messenger>right click>properties>disable

here is a listing of other services that should
be disabled: http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12
I recommend everyone who uses XP to go through the
list and modify their services - will save you
plenty of RAM and make your comp more secure.

I also recommend firefox.

as for a firewall, the best is just using
a router. But if you are not networked,
use sygate or outpost (I prefer outpost).
There are some compatibility problems
with sygate + firefox - or at least there
was back when I used it - not sure
if it has been fixed or not.

outpost pro is probably the best software firewall
for windows, but it is a bit advanced (not too bad tho)
If you want a copy + serial numbers, let me know.
