    #4507745 - 08/07/05 07:14 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I could either use rye grass seed, WBS, Popcorn, or Rye berries.
Which one should i use?

I don't know about rye grass seed, but all of the other grains you mentioned will work fine. Ralphster has a tek about growing Pan Cyan and he uses Pennington's brand finch seed. He says that rye berries work well also.

BTW, I am currently using rye berries for a Pan Cyan grow and it seems to be colonizing well on it

Whew, pan cyans are definitely some intense shrooms. Easily went to level 5 on a little over an 8th.

Any works fine, but I'd use WBS, since you have to spawn it to poo, WBS makes the best spawn IMO. I'd also throw in about 20% rye too though, with a smidge of verm..basically preparing grain the usual way when being spawned to poo. Make sure you only fill the jars up HALF way, no more, and try not to shake them at all, if you do shake, shake only once at 30-70% and do it very gently, more rolling the grains around then shaking. Then spawn to horse poo with a very thin casing layer. Good luck

Do you mean that you are going to spawn Rye? That is a bad idea since Rye contaminates more readily than any other substrate.
Ive grown pans off heaps of substrates - millet, rye grass seed, rye berries, straw and manure - and i always found that they had the best kick and health off manure - whether spawned or colonised straight from agar wedge.

Pans rock! But Dont mist once they pin!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll second this very important advise:

Out of curiosity, why would 100% colonized rye contaminate more readily then any other substrate? I've used rye plenty of times with no problems. I'm not calling you a liar, but can you provide any evidence to prove that theory?

I agree with her, when it comes to Pan Cyans. Birdseed doesnt seem to recover as fast, or rye isnt eaten all the way through. I'm not sure why, but rye as spawn doesnt do as well, and when your working with pan cyans which have weak mycelium that contaminates more easily (compared to cubensis), it can occasionally turn bad using rye to spawn, compared to WBS. I also think it has to do with the many inoculation points giving quicker colonization.
