How far some people fall
    #4506791 - 08/07/05 11:52 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

We went to dinner Friday night for a friends birthday. We gathered at a small restaurant in a seedy off-strip casino. The food was OK, but nothing special. They had a small bar tucked away in one corner of the restuarant; maybe 20 feet long, dimmly lit, and almost empty. I say almost because there was one guy sitting there alone all night. He was desperately trying to strike up conversations with anyone who walked up to order a drink. That man was Bob Stupak.

I realize that anyone outside of Las Vegas would not know who Bob Stupak is. Lets just say he is legendary in this town. His history is long and colorful here. And he epitomizes the best and worst of what Vegas has always been. Here is a link to a page that gives you a good idea of who this man is. It is an enjoyable read from the perspective of the author and it has a good history about Bob Stupak.

If you don't want to take a minute to read the page then there is one quote from the last paragraph that correlates with my Friday night experience...
Quote:

He now wanders around Las Vegas like the living dead, a shadow of what he was, and a somewhat unwelcome presence in the new corporate friendly city

Poor Bob Stupak. He used to be a big player in this town. He commanded respect everywhere he went (even if people laughed at him behind his back). Now he spends his time trying to get any randomn stranger to have a conversation with him in some dark corner.

How far we fall...

Quite a story there! I always wondered how that Stratosphere tower came about - remember hearing about the financial difficulties when I was younger, but never of Stupak.

How did he look? After the reported facial reconstruction I'm surprised you came to recognize him!

It'd be funny is someone threw quarters on the ground in front of him to see if he would get on his hands and knees to pick them up.

He was never a very good looking guy to start with. And after the accident and the reconstruction he is even worse. His face is kinda mis-shapen, especially around his mouth. But there have been enough pics of him circulated since the accident that he's still pretty recognizable.

I wonder what he does these days? Is he realatively poor or did he save enough money from the glory days to live comfortably now? I've heard that his mind is not all it used to be before the accident either. I never cared for the guy much, but I still sympathize with anyone who takes such a drastic fall from grace.
