Cell phones
    #4506575 - 08/07/05 10:13 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

How much do cell phones affect your lives? I used to be against them 100%, as relying on a electronic piece of equipment attached with a monthly fee just to stay in contact seemed outrageous to me.

But alas, I've given in to the demands of society and I am officially a cell phone junkie. Just got a new one today with all the accessories, it's kinda fun. It's also nice being able to travel anywhere in the country and always have a "home" phone so to speak, where anyone can get ahold of me, at any time.

Screw home phones anyways, might as well put the money towards something you can take with you. Does anyone actually have a home phone line anymore? (joking) I know one older family member that does, but that's about it. Home phones seem to be phasing out rather fast.

Diver....

Nice to see you posting in the Pub my friend!

I have a love hate relationship with cell phones, but they have most certainly changed the way we live in many respects.

I don't have a home phone, I haven't had one for 4 years.

Good to see you too Ripple.  Yeah creamrocks, the negatives do seem to outweigh the positives at times.  At other times the roles are reversed though.  Eh, cell phones are like women anyways...can't live with or without.

I think it's important to be able to leave your house without your cell phone. Once you feel tied to it...ouch.

I find that whenever I don't have my phone on me, I need it.  And when I do have it on me, I rarely need it for anything important.

There was one time though, when I was going to my friends house that I had to call 911 for this lady that was being beat in her house.  I heard screams and saw them in the doorway fighting.  I didn't see who the woman was fighting with but she got pulled in the house and I heard screams and someone being hit.  Then this other older lady came out with a child in her arms and told me to call 911.  If I didn't have my cell on me, that woman may not have been here today since there were no pay phones in the vicinity.

It's a good thing I happened to be walking by at that time. :frown:

My cellphone is there. Payed for by the parents. I don't use it though. Its sitting on the kitchen counter dead. Been that way since Wensday. Its because the stupid charger quit working.... so I'm waiting on funds to get a new one. Plus hah, noone ever calls anyways. I have unlimited txt messaging but my friend had hers taken away after she quit her job going into college, so thats pointless too. Oh well, its good to have when I need it! But its not like a gym membership which I use over and over again all the time.

What kind of phone is it?  I have a few chargers laying around.  It's funny you should say the charger is messed up cuz mine and a friends charger just started doing that.  We would plug our phones in and it just wouldn't charge.  I have a few chargers hanging around so it's not a big deal to me, but my friend had to buy another one because I didn't have one for her phone. :frown:

I don't have a home phone. I don't see the point anymore. With a cell, you have a phone with caller ID and answering machine in one. I have camera in my phone as well, even though the quality of the pictures leaves something to be desired (see Lamb Of God thread).

cells are way more affordable than a land-line, plus you get more for your money - voicemail, alarm clock, camera, phone book, etc.

I carry mine in my pocket everywhere, although I do enjoy just turning it off for several hours at a time when I want to be alone. I also keep mine on vibrate, so it' not annoying.

Hehe, I haven't had a home phone line in over four years!  Only my cell, and 90% of the time I am unreachable since I either don't turn my cell phone on, or more often, I simply hate carrying it with me since it's so damn bulky (anything larger than a matchbox and I ain't carrying it!).  Thus, it usually sits at home in a desk drawer when I'm out of the house - so if you're lookin' to contact me, you better get used to leaving voicemails!

Yeah, it took me a long time to get a cell phone and now that I split mins. with my sister it's hard to stay under. I'll aree with that guy who says it's cheaper than a lan line since you have a caller i.d. and answering machine all in one but how can cell companies charge me minutes to call you and then charge you minutes to answer? I think we all shoul rise and defeat the evil. Or just smoke out... whatever, pace

I've had two cell phones so far- one when I was in high school, and one when I was a sophomore in college. When I had them, they ruled my life and I would feel lost without them. Its been almost 2 years since I've had one and I'm doing just fine. Maybe because I'm a loser and no one would call me anyways? I'm sure I'll end up getting another one eventually, probably with a pay-as-you-go plan because for the past year I've been moving around the country way too often to get a plan.

They milk you dry with pay as you go but I guess it does have some advantages if you have bad credit, or like you said, if you aren't able to get a plan for other reasons.
