Could I Xfer good Myc.?
    #4506533 - 08/07/05 11:44 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I think...actually I'm pretty sure I have contams. (For a description see contam forum.) Well here's the deal I'm broke as hell With rent and my PMP i just built, they took my last dollar. So i cannot afford another syringe. So my question to you is, Could I take some of the non affected mycelium and transfer it to a new sterile jar, i know it would be a long shot with contams and all but is it possible to do this and get new growth? Ive read that you can do grain to grain but this is BRF and VERM. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
TwIsTeD

You sure can, I used to do transfers with BRF all the time, and it worked really, really well. Ghetto transfers: Work inside a large ziplock or garbage bag with gloves. Wipe down gloves and a clean spoon with alcohol. Open jars and scoop out clean mycelium while working fast, and transfer to fresh substrate.

It works well, you don't need a glove box or flowhood for success with transfers.

So when preparing jars do I just leave a little bit out so i can put mycelium in there after they are boiled?

Not really necessary, all you need is a small space at the top so you can transfer a spoonful of substrate.

I know its been a while but if my jars have been contaminated for like a week what are my chances of getting a good transfer. I havent seen any growth in a week weither it be on what im considering contam. or mycelium, which im not even sure thats it is contaminated. They look like a little round yellow/white circle and not a perfect circle either. But the 2 jars i see it in are almost 100% colonized. there is just a little section at the bottom left un colonized. Now i do know atleast 3 are contaminated or atleast something wrong because they havent even moved in like 2 weeks so im pitching those. Am i just freakin out about the others or does that round yellow/white spot sound like a contam?

The spot could just be mycelium waste. Though if it isn't colonizing there, then it could be bacteria. I recently dunked WBS that had bacteria in h2o2 water to kill bacteria and spawned to pasteurized compost, with great results. I cannot find any evidence of bacterial growth in the new substrate. (a clear container was used.) No smell, no lacking growth, nothing. In fact it appears to be growing over the spots that looked like bacterial breeding grounds while in the jars.
Also, if you have a syringe (used ones work too) you can sterilize some Karo syrup water and inject it into the good jars, leave for a day or so, and suck it up again, thus creating a live culture syringe. At least that's the theory.

Hold on a second...are you talking about taking a peice from an infected jar? No way, that mycelium IS infected and no good anymore.

what happens if you put non-contamed myc from a BRF cake into a dextrose/water solution? any chance for an LC...? (hopefully not a newb question)

You can take a peice of myc from an uncontaminated jar and put it in a LC or a grain jar, or another PF Tek jar. Its all the same.

You just can not take a peice of myc from a contaminated jar. The spores are all over that jar and will take off once it has substrate to do so.

thanks scat!
been wondering on that for a while...
ive had my experience with contam'd jars tho, just a little nasty color on the outside, and when you open it up the whole fucking middle of the cake is molded up. not pretty.  :argh:
