adventures in indiana!

ok, so just for the hell of it i went out into the woods next to my school to see if i could find anything, even a leaf that slightly resembled a mushroom :).

after 3 hours of searching i was finally pleasantly surprised. on a bunch of different fallen trees i found approximately 45 mushrooms that appear to be of the same variety, with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions. hopefully i'll have a spore print soon, but for now here's a rough description -

cap: ranges from dark brown to pale yellow-brown. most of them are conical some with a nipple-thing goin on at the top (i don't know all the real terms). others are slightly more rounded at the top. i grabbed a few that were more flat, but i think they're older. the caps range from a couple centimeters to about an inch (oops, change in units there). the color fades from light to dark, center to outside.

gills: range from light to dark brown. lines extending radially from the center

stem: no more than about 1.5" long, no more than maybe a centimeter thick. light brown to dark brown (mostly light), hollow, no bluing observed yet (i think) on a lot of them there's a brown stripe on the stem a little below the cap (which makes me think they're maybe galerina, 'cause i think i read somewhere that they have a stripe).

tell me what you think. like i said, i think they're poisonous, but if they're magic, it should be interesting. i plan on maybe going back saturday to see if anything else popped up. i'll try to have pictures up in a bit.

thanks!

Doesn't sound good, especially with the brown stems. Take a spore print for sure, but I'm thinkin' toss 'em.

They are most likely deadly Galerinas...found a tonne this year, we have similar climates...try to find some Gyms if you have the chance...they should be all over Indiana.

ok, i took a spore print, and, according to Mushroom John's fieldbook, a psilocybe should have spores that are "chocolate to purple brown." whereas galerinas have "rusty orange brown" sporeprints.

my sporeprint looks, like, hmm, crayon brown. that's the best way i can describe it: brown. it's not orange-ish, but it's not purple-ish either. are there any other good tests i can do???

as to the stems, only a few are really brown. the rest are like off-white kinda

still working on the pictures, by the way :)

Might as well not waste time with the pics - they sound like definite tossers. Neither magic nor edible.

ok, that's the conclusion i came to. i'm going to go out this weekend to see if any gymnopolus (sp?) are growing. it just rained today, so things are looking good! :)

thanks for everyone's help...eventually i'll be a bit better, but remember this was my first hunt :)
