i'm such a mechanical noob
    #4503833 - 08/06/05 03:12 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I went downstairs to look at my long neglected bike from before the video games, and it's not in good shape. Squeaky brakes, some paint is coming off, and both tires are flatter than a schoolgirl. But I have NO IDEA how to fix any of it. All I can do is look at it =/ I have no idea how to tell if the tire is ruined or just needs to be reinflated. I have no idea what the deal is with "tubes" and other tire words. I don't know what to use to clean up rusted spots with. I don't know what kind of grease to use if I need grease which I'm sure I will.

n00b! So much n00b....

Inflate the tires... if they deflate you need new tubes

Rust can come off with WD-40

Grease.. go to any bike shop, or probably walmart

w00t. Got 2 new tubes and some tire levers. Fixed my front tire! I still have to do my rear tire but there is a bunch of shit in the way and I'm done for today. Then after that, it's removing the noise from my brakes. And then I'm all set!

Get new brakes if they are squeking. That means that there isn't enough friction. May I ask how old and how much was the bike ridden?

The bike is at least 7-8 years old, and it was ridden a decent bit, however only for like..1-2 years and then I got into video games unchecked and that died off quickly..

Isn't there any way to lube up the brakes or something? Do I have to get new brakes?

I really can't see your bike so Im just throwing out things. Bike brakes are pretty much putting friction between the pads and the "rim" of the wheel. If you put grease on it you wont beable to stop as fast but would fix the sqeaking noise.

WD-40 will actualt cause the rust to get worse over time

this stuff is good for taking care of rust, it's phosphoric acid

you don't need new brakes if their sqeaking, take a little bit of orange juice or soda on your finger and rub it around the rim where the brakes hit. too much and they will stick, but that should help you out if you don't want to buy new brakes.

a little sandpaper to the pads will also eliminate excessive squeeling, generaly
it;s because the rubber is hardening
