It looks like some kind of psathrylla (sp?) type. If you're in the NW, there's a ton of those around. Real dark, black sporeprint. Not magic.

What were they growing on? It almost looks like there's some blueing on the lower stem in the second picture.

Yep, definitely looks like some type of Psathyrella, they are always an abundant mushrooms, and can and will fool the eye for just a second from a distance :)
