Possible grant need help

I may be recieving a small grant from a university where I am an undergrad biology major. I've grown a lot of psilocybin mushrooms but to keep the research legal (which will be on optimal substrate content for half pint jars) I need a mushroom that does not manufacture psilocybin but looks like a psilocybin containing mushroom. The experiment will actually be done with a psilocybin containing mushroom but the paper and results will be fudged to protect the innocent and provide me with more product. Any feedback would be greatly apprecited...maybe I can finally put to the subsrate content debate to rest, for atleast one strain..thanks

Good pick Teonan, and I have prints if you need them, I also have Ps. coprophila which I think looks even more magic than semiglobata. Good luck with the grant.

Interesting idea to get some money to pay for your setup, but lousy science. The data that you generate from whatever experiment you're carrying out will be valid for Psilocybe cubensis, but not valid for whatever the species is that you'll be reporting you've grown. Of course, if its just some trivial undergraduate class project that's not going to result in any kind of published paper, then I suppose it really doesn't matter. What I'm wondering is - why do you need to find a mushroom that looks like P cubensis? Are you going to include pictures as part of your project? I'd think that through *really* carefully if I were you - anybody with any kind of background in mycology who sees those pictures is going to recognize those mushrooms for what they are, and I don't think claiming that they're Stropharia semiglobata or Psilocybe coprophila (which nobody ever bothers to cultivate, even as experimental organisms) is going to be very convincing. I don't think P coprophila looks anything like P cubensis - its much smaller, for starters. Myc

I wasn't gonna say anything, but I wholeheartedly second that.

Personally, I'm jealous.
When picking a look-alike, you might want to consider a mushroom that bruises blue but isn't illegal. Here's a list of those (Thanks, shroomery.org): http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24061
To really tell you what look-alike would work best I'd need to know the exact species you were using. Or you could just use google images and look at all the species in that list.
Any chance of my friend who's studying to be a biochem major on getting a grant like that? Could you tell us more about your experiment? We can talk via e-mail or AIM or if you have a website about it I could check it out.
Good luck, mate.
PS: I forgot to mention that what you're doing is, of course, highly dangerous and you should be very careful. If you're going to be dealing with highly educated mycologists (that don't like you), they may be able to recognize the species, but it's very true that many mushrooms look _a lot_ alike, so you may have a chance. You could probably grow two cultures.

I would recommend Reishi. It's easy to grow, legal, and doesn't look ANYTHING like a psilocybin mushroom. It will even be good science. RR
