Colonization Speeds
    #4502269 - 08/06/05 01:42 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I posted awhile back that I had been planning my first attempt at growing. Now I have a few questions since I've been at it. I've had 6 cakes colonizing at about an average temp. of 75-80. It's been almost 3 weeks and that jars are almost fully colonized. Is that an abnormal colonization speed for Taz on birdseed or is it just me. Also, I think I have a contamination in one jar but I'm not sure. There is a dime size black patch surrounded by the mycelium. Was thinking about throwing it out soon, just gonna check on it in a few days.

colonization was probably slow due to poor temp conditions. Should be btwn 82-86. Sounds like you're doing qt jars too, i think the more substrate there is to colonize, the longer it takes.

To get really high is to forget yourself. And to forget yourself is to see everything else. And to see everything else is to become an understanding molecule in evolution, a conscious tool of the universe. And I think every human being should be a conscious tool of the universe. . . .

I agree that the temps are a bit low for optimal colonization. Did you shake the jars? I usually get full colonization of grain in a week or less, but I've only used rye berries soaked and cooked in h poo tea. When they are 20% colonized I shake the jars, then again in a couple of days when there is obviously more growth. Shaking seems to speed things up quite a bit. What kind of air exchange do you have. How big are the jars.

PF jars have taken several weeks for me to colonize, usually, I believe when there was too little air exchange or they have been packed too tightly.

Im pretty new at this but... 86 seems to high since the jars retain about 5 deg of heat. Also my grain jars colonize in about a week as well as my pf jars. Ive never had a jar in the incubator for more then 11 days
