one thing i was thinking was geting a eMac 1ghz online for 350$ and just sticking bsd on that. and the other thing is that i would build one b ut dont know what mother boards or prossessers to get i would like one that could get as much ram as possible i see some that pcs that have up to 10gb of ram i want as much as possible thanks for any help ,

Ewww Mac are you serious? Gross! You could buy a decent used 1gz PC for that price and load it up with memory, I would check ebay.

os X is based on darwin it has unix in it

linux runs great on Macs, though.

I'd build a netBSD box and I wouldn't use Mac hardware :laugh:

10GB of ram is alot for a freebsd box.

I dont know what you are doing though, but ive had freeBSD on 256MG ram run actively as a server and client for over 2 months without a reboot, and that is including extensive X usage. I think freebsd handles memory very well, and right now, with 1.5GB ram, I feel like I can do anything.

Dont know your expectations, but you dont need super processing power to see good results.
