Growing Blue Lotus
    #4501044 - 08/05/05 07:52 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

My mom wanted to build a small pond garden and well I can take full advantage and grow some fine lotus. I am gonna order 2oz of seeds from IAS.

After reading a little info online this is what I have so far. To germinate the seeds I will fill a few small pots with loam add the seeds and cover with a little more loam. Then get a tupperware container and fill with water and sink the pots to the bottom. I am gonna put the container on my window sill for the time it take to germinate. To airate the water I am gonna take a turkey syinge and spray air into the water a few times a day. This method can even be used on the larger pond garden.

After the seeds have germinated and a few leaves are on the surface. I will sperate the seedlings and plant them in their own seperate bigger pots. and sink into their final pond.

I will had some generic fertilizer to cause flowering after the plants are well developed.

Has anyone here grown blue lotus and can give me some tips?

Be sure to nic an opening on the seed with a file, and keep them above 70F until they're settled in.

I have a nice BL garden in a fish tank in my back yard.....they are very easy to grow.

To germinate...

File a\down a bit of the seed coat and put them in a large of bottled water. Put them in a sunny windowsil until they poop a tail.

After that you could put them in seperate pots but what I did was fill the bottom of my tank with very clayous, rocky soil, and planted them directly in that. They are a bout 3 weeks old and have 4-7 leaves each. I have a friend who has a pond so I think I`ll move some into there...can anyone tell me if they will die out in the winter....I would imagine so.

which of these is the one you're trying to grow, the first is called blue lotus
but is a Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea 9a water lily the second is a lotus
that happens to be blueish

the seedcoat generaly refers to the true lotus which has large seeds, the
Nym,Car usualy has very small seeds and are quite difficult to germinate

I don't believe so, many Lillies make through the winter just fine. Otherwise try to contain them to a 5 gal and bring them inside. If you would like to have fish in there that make it through as well, you should be able to find a disc heater, which melts just enough ice to get 02 to the fishies. Barley straw and a bubbler work great for algae btw.
