A few weeks ago, I got some syringes, and went off searching for supplies. It was brought to my attention that walmart and home depot both do not carry vermiculite. So I purchased "Scotts Sphagnum Peat Moss". SSPM is very much like dirt and not moss. I made 10 jars of SSPM and BRF, boiled the jars for 1.5 hours, and shot'em up with spores. One week, no growth. Then one day, the jars developed huge white spots. It's been another week and I'll be birthing within two to three days. I used a layer of dry SSPM on the top, and I think, due to its dense dirtlikeness, It has helped me keep contams out seeing as I lost olny one jar to ferocious lime green mold. My sterilization consists of boiling the jars, and spraying the air with a light mist from a bottle of bleach and water(30% bleach 70% water est.) before opening the "houses" they're in. The houses are like rubbermaid containers I had around the house. Sorry if im rambling, i'll update you in a few days.

forgot to ask, is perlite humidification prone to contam? more-so than other techniques?

you can put a little bit of peroxide in with your perlite and it helps keep out contams... good luck... also, you might wanna check out dr bluethumb's online store for vermiculite.

Nope. I use perlite without any problem at all. I dont even need to hand spray. Just be sure that the jars/houses/whatever are 100% colonized before you birth, that way the cakes are very contam resistant and you dont need to worry about anything short of sneezing on the cakes.

some people say it makes no difference at all, but i sterilize my perlite before using it. i have a pc but you could just boil it, strain it and add it to your terranium. the steam very quickly humidifies the terranium, just trap it inside. but do let it cool before adding your cakes/casings. your really should set up your terranium a couple of days before hand to make sure it is in good working condition anyways.
i also add hydrogen peroxide to my misting bottle to. it doesn't hurt anything, so i mist everthing with it.

back a few weeks ago when i was lookin for verm i went to 3 different home depots and all of them told me they no longer carried it. Not even in the huge bags. I had to go to a nursery to get some.

i read somewhere, that pearlite is cooked to about a million degrees before going into the bags, so is pretty sterilised when you get it. I just pour from bag into terrarium and never had a problem. Just don't breathe in the dust, as it will be like breathing in glass dust, whcih i was informed isn't good for your lungs
