First hunt, need some identification help please.
    #4499828 - 08/05/05 12:22 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone could identify these mushrooms for me thankyou.

* Habitat: On a grassy field (pasture), on the Wirral in England, not sure about altitude though. Found them growing out of the soil about 4 or 5 meters away from a wooded area on a field which also had buttercups on.
* Characteristics of the gills: not attatched, light to medium brown in colour and quite close together.
* Characteristics of the stem: the stem is aproximately 3mm in diameter and 45mm long. top of the stem is very light brown and fades to medium/dark brown at the bottom. quite solid but it is hollow, the hollow bit is thin compared to the stem.
* Characteristics of the cap: 16mm in diameter, middle is medium/light brown and fades to very light brown but the very edge is medium/dark brown, its rubbery, conical and convex (umbrella shape kind of).
* Spore print color: dark brown, I think.
* Color that the mushroom bruises: I can't really see any bruising.
* Scent of the mushroom: mud, grass, regular house-hold mushroom.
* Anything else you might find important: they're smaller than most shrooms I've seen but it might be because its just the start of August could they just be small Liberty Caps? It rained yesterday and now its sunny today, and I found them at about 3-4pm. The measurements and colour desriptions are from the biggest one but the colour description is the same for the rest.

I'm new to this and although they kind of look like Liberty Caps I don't know what they are, pictures below to aid identification, thanks for your time.

Looks like paneolus of some sort. most likely feonisecii. Do you have a field guide?

I don't. I'm planning on getting a guide to British active species but currently I don't have anything apart from you guys.

Well, I wouldn't eat anything based on what I can tell you from here. When you buy a guide you ought to buy a general mushroom guide and another guide that focuses on active species. Pretty good description by the way. Most people who are looking for an Id don't post enough info. If that is Paneolina feonisecii it's not active.

Thanks for your help and I will take your advice and get two guides. I don't spose anyone is aware of a good general British guide then?

I read on this page http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Panaeolus_foenisecii.html that Paneolina feonisecii is active but the amount of alkaloid compounds are so small that its insufficient to have any effect.

Wish I could help you there. Never been to Great Britain. Ive heard there are lots of active species though. Must be similar to the pacific northwest here in the US. I would love to go sometime.

There is some debate to the activity of foenisecii. I myself do not believe it to be active at all.

Even if it is, though, it is so low in potency that they are still pretty worthless. Probably would need about 200-300 or more to get anything off them if they were.

A good [Psilocybe] guide for any region is "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" by Paul Staments.

lol, thanks for the information.

Would be intrested in talking to a Brit about guides if there's one reading this.

Anymore advice is welcomed, my head is reasonably empty of knowledge to do with mushrooms compared to you guys.

My personal experience says not worth eating. Of course no two strains are exactly alike.
