Female Musicians worth listening too

OK. So, I was thinking, I know Tori Amos and Bjork are worth listening too. But, I am sure there are other female artists who are worth listening too without just banking on appealing to 13 year olds. Who are they? I am more interested in people who write a lot of their own or their bands music.

Vocaly, my love is for grunting death metal... so that doesn't translate well to females. Unfortunatly. I do soooo love them.
I am looking though my music files, and am actualy appaled at the lack of female representation. Shit.
I second your question, for sure. Always in search of good music.

PJ Harvey! Listen to To Bring You My Love, and Rid Of Me, and all her other albums. Her voice is incredible, and her music just rocks.
The Throwing Muses (fronted by Kristin Hersh, who also has great solo stuff like Hips And Makers). They have transformed a lot over the years, so pick a style. Their first 1986 self titled album is punk with a little country and a lot of mental illness. The Real Ramona, from 1991, is probably the best one overall. It's a little poppier, but it's just wonderful. Another standout is University, wich has kind of a middle-period Pearl Jam sound.
Also check out Sleater Kinney's new album, The Woods.

Nicos only on the first VU album. Jefferson Airplane was pretty good with the album Surrealistic Pillow. Female jazz singers from like 20's-40's are pretty good. Lydia Lunch has her moments. A LOT of soul and R&B groups from the 50's and 60's have female lead singers, and are quite good. Motown sound, that sort of thing, with Booker T & the MG's backing them up.

The only good female musicians I have ever heard were vocalists or violinists/cello players. I've never heard a female playing percussion, piano, saxophone, guitar or bass at a virtuoso level, only men seem to excel in this area.

I know Nico's only on one album thats why I listed said album and not said band. Nico had a solo career too.
