all right, see if you can figure this one out...

so afoaf has been growing for 2 years now but he is all of a sudden, for the first time since his initial pftek try, having problems with contams. he has just moved into a new house that is kind of old and sits in a very damp valley and therefore prone to contams floating around. so here's the run down...

  • he has sectioned off a 12ft x 6 ft part of a closet and lined the entire thing with black plastic so it is airtight.
  • the grow/work room is sealed off from the rest of the house.
  • he uses a glove box for inoculation and grain to grain
  • he uses latex gloves, a bag over his head, a dust mask and fully cleans his clothes/skin before working
  • he is not experiencing contams in the jars (rye in quarts) but he has contaminated the last 6 casings that he has tried and he has only done 6 casings in this house
  • the casings are usually a quart of rye spawned into 3-4 quarts of pasturized compost/manure (store bought) which is put into 5 gallon plastic paint buckets which have, of course, been sterilized.
  • buckets have wide mouth filter patch on top for air circulation, temp is 82-88 with just a little bit of condensation in buckets.
  • the myc usually colonizes fine for 4-8 days but then slows to a stop and within 2 days trich/some other green mold starts popping up, almost always on top of substrate/casing, like the bucket lid is shitting mold all over his work
  • he has tried less water in the substrate as well as more air flow
  • he has used this exact method twice before with even less sterile technique and it has worked fairly well (luck?)
  • it fucking sucks because he feels like he has both wasted a lot of money and lost his touch :frown:

so yeah if anyone has any advice, any at all, he desperately needs help...thanks very much.

By adding lime you can buy yourself some crucial time. That's if your substrate is prepared right. I use 1/4 cup of hydrated lime per gallon and a 1/2 of substrate. More lime won't hurt.

There is no reason to use a filter on a casing. You need much more air exchange than that will allow. Also, 80+ is way too hot for a substrate, and only encourages contaminant molds. Lower the temp to the low to mid 70's and you'll do much better.

what should he use as the lid to his buckets? (they are the large white paint buckets). he has already invested in quite a few...any ideas?

btw thanks so much for the help guys

EDIT: the shroomery FAQ http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23443 says to keep casings incubated at 80-84F...also an update, three more contaminated, they had way too much moisture in them though. it is becoming wuite hard to figure out a proper medium for everything. AGH!!!! this is really frustrating.
