I recieved this e-mail last night about some computer parts I'm selling.
"Hello, I have interest in buying your(CPUMotherboard and RAM ),just let me know the current price and i will also like to have the pictures.i am located in UK and my mode payment is by sertify cashier cheque, which will be issued to you if really you are want to sell it for me.so get back to me with this information so that i can forward the payment to you right way.this is the information as fallow. 1)YOUR FULL NAME...... 2)YOUR FULL ADDRESS... 3)YOUR PHONE NUMBERS... 4)YOURZIP-CODE.......... with all this i will be able to forward the payment to you intime okay. waiting to read from you asap. Regards. Mrs Mapuka."
I replied saying I would accept cash only.
Then this morning I recieve this e-mail from "Billy James" at 3:30am(my time)
"Hello, I got your contact details on the advert you placed on sarnia CLASSIFIED which you want to sell a CPUMotherboard and RAM for $230.
I would love to have the CPUMotherboard and RAM for the asking price and i also have a shipper who would do the picking up of the CPUMotherboard and RAM for me.
Concerning payment,Please let me know if you would accept a MONEY ORDER OR CASHIER'S CHECK as my business client based in the United State has agreed to make the payment on my behalf.
Kindly leave me feed back as soon as possible with pic if available.
Thank you. regards"
Do you think I'm being scammed??? I was thinking I should reply to the second reply saying that it's perfect he has a business client willing to pick it up, that way he can send a cheque to that person and when they come to pick it up off my they can hand me cash.
What do you guys think I should do?

accept an international money order or cashiers check, allow for the payment to clear before you ship the items

Ya so back on topic.
I'm not too familiar with money orders, would that be safer? Or should I tell the person I will accept the cashiers chequer, but I will wait untill the cheque clears before sending the stuff?

international moneyorders and cashiers checks are paid in advance (seldom ever stolen) and are guaranteed funds, it's the safest way to go, again I stress that you need to wait until the funds post to your bank account before you ship just in case it's a fraudulent or counterfiet check

This is a reply I got on another forum.
"f the person is genuine, and if the cheque is genuine, then it should be reliable. But there have been cases of banks having books of cashier's cheques stolen from branches.
Cashier's cheques are also often a prime feature of Internet fraud. The way it works is that the 'buyer' has a friend, or client, or something that owes them money and asks you to accept a cashier's cheque for a sum larger than the goods you're selling, and to wire the excess to their shipping agent. I'm sure you can see where that is going...
This kind of fraud attempt is VERY common.
The only real security that a cashier's cheque offers is that it can't be returned unpaid due to lack of funds, This is because when the bank issues the cheque, it effectively removes the funds from the customer's account at that time, and puts them in a special account awaiting the receipt of the cashier's cheque through the clearing system. And, obviously, the bank won't issue the cheque if the funds weren't in the account.
But if the cashier's cheque is forged or stolen, none of that will help you. If you receive a cashier's cheque, banker's draft or building society cheque, I would strongly recommend that you get your bank to call the issuing bank to verify that the cheque is genuine.
It's possible your buyer and the cheque are genuine, but it's such a common feature of internet fraud, I'd be very sceptical personally. The short answer to your question about whether this payment method is reliable is "hell, no"."
He seems to be pretty skeptical. If I recieve a casheirs cheque could I get my bank to contact theirs and verify it's legitimacy?

I like to build PCs. I know that I built a pretty nice PC for my mom for about $250.00USD. This excluding the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. So.. Why the hell does someone want to spend all that energy on transporting your used PC overseas. It seams like your right. Someone is trying to get your info, because that is probably worth more than your computer.

P.S. The one for my mom had a case, ram, and a 60GB HD, with a 1.2GHz processor.

yes, you should also have no problem in contacting the issuing bank to verify funds as well, I still stress waiting for the funds to post in your bank account before shipping, some people have some elaborate scams, I've had people in several asian countries try scamming me on big ticket items

Yikes I already gave him my name, adress, ect before I thought it was a scam. I just got another email from "another person" and I think it's the same guy. I'm not going to risk it though. I'll probably end up trading a local guy for his celeron D 2.8GHz and overclock it for extra perfomace because I doub't ill sell my gear now.

You should just get the check and call the bank when the guy comes and make sure its legit. Then give the guy the stuff if it is legit and if not call the police on him

Calling the police won't do anything if he's in a different country. I'm not going to bother with this person anymore.

Run the check or money order by the feds before u try to cash it so they can trace back were it came from. If you try to cash it you'll get charged the amount if it's fraudulent. this almost happened to me too.
