Spawn bag *HELP*
    #4499196 - 08/05/05 11:01 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

im looking at spawn bags on mycofactory.com, and they appear to have 2 types, a standard one with just a filter patch, and a "pre sealable injector port" bag. when they say "pre sealable", are they suggesting that the standard bags cannot be sealed before autoclaving (or that i would require a special tool to seal it)? How would i inoculate with the standard bags without an injectorport? are either type of bag reusable? once a bag is sealed, can it be opened normally or do i have to cut it up?

standard bags should ot be sealed air tight before sterilizing. The presealable i believe can be sealed before sterilizing. To inoculate a standard bad just rub some rubbing alcohol on a spot on the bag, inoculate through the bag, then cover the spot with some tape. I believe they are resusable as long as you clean them out after you use them.

I know that the standard bags have to be cut open after sealing, but im not sure if the pre sealable ones can be opened w/o cutting after sterilization.

hope this helps

the standard bags will expand and sometimes rupture if sealed and then sterilized,
as for innoculating them, simply inject through the side of the bag into the
substrate and tape over the hole, dont move the bag until it's taped

how do you seal the standard bags? do you just press the flaps together or is their some tool i must use?

if i leave a corner open for gas exchange during autoclaving, can i seal the bag the rest of the way after it has been autoclaved?

is their any real advantage to using those special presealable filterpatch bags?

thx for the help

I got mine from sporeworks they all came with a self healing injector port (no tape required), filter patch and pre-sterilized. I didn't even think about the possibility or re-using them, even the self healing injector port, cool Idea. I think you could seal it with hot glue and a curling iron...hmmm. :strokebeard:

as far as pre-sealing spawn bags before pressure cooking, i have done over 100 bags pre-sealing before pcing, and all i do is when they are still warm in the pc take them out and wrap the seam that i made with the impulse sealer in aluminium foil ducting tape (no not duct tape, this is actually aluminium foil with a sticky side to it) and i dont get contaminate issues, i also just inject through the bag, screw the self healing injection site.

Yes you will need an impulse sealer to seal up the standard bags. If you are using standard it would be a good idea to partially seal the bag before autoclaving then seal off the rest after.

The advantage of the filter patch bags is you can seal them entirely before autoclaving.

Thank you kronnyQ, you have demonstrated a rare show of intelligence.

One last set of questions,

are the presealable bags resealable/reusable? Do they use an impulse sealer like the standard bags?

Does any other company besides mycofactory have presealable bags? Ive looked and only Thesporeworks.com has injector site bags, but doesnt mention them being presealable. It is my assumption that the amount of airflow out of the injector site allows for the bags to be presealable as so they dont explode in the autoclave. Am i correct?
