BREAKTHROUGH WAY TO DRY SHROOMS

How to build a Dehydrator
Equipment: 1 box fan, 4 paper air-conditioning filters, and 2 bungee cords
Evenly distribute the shrooms onto 3 of the air filters, laying them in the grooves and then stacking the filters on top of one another. Top these with 1 empty filter. Next, lay the box fan on its side and lay the filters on top of it. Strap the filters to the fan with 2 bungee cords. Stand the fan upright, plug in and turn on. Allow the shrooms to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
Got the idea from an episode of Good Eats. I will get pictures soon. Maybe first a diagram.
The cool thing is the though of expanding this into something bigger

How is that a breakthrough. Breakthrough man! Go grab yourself a dehydrator and they'll be done in 12-24 hours (big batch too).

Well have you purchased a new dehydrator recently? Don't tell me that you could find one at a thrift store cheap either, not everyone can. I will bet that the method I described would also get the mushrooms as dry in 12hrs as the mushrooms you dehydrate.
I think its a breakthrough because it is a really cheap way to dry shrooms sanitary and at a low cost.

The box fan & filters - if bought new retail - would cost about the same as a 4 tray Nesco American Harvest dehydrator retail & you can make JERKY in a dehydrator - to.
What you don't seem to realize is - fan drying will not get out much more moisture that is contained in the air - you are blowing through the fan. So, if your ambiant room rh is 31%, the shrooms will still contain about 15 to 18%. Which is enough to make them --> [MOLD.. if stored in a plastic bag.

I ordered one off ebay. Last I checked at walmart they were 34 bucks.
My dehydrator gets quite hot, in the 140-150 range. Half of them are done after 12-18 hours (the bottom trays), then you put together all the trays at 12 hours, remove any dry ones, and reduce the amount of trays..the rest are done in 24 hours. Talking 4-8 ounces dry..
I also poored dririte in the bottom of the dehydrator, that sped times up a bit. It makes a bit of a mess..but dehydrators on ebay are cheap as hell, I got another backup, but this one has done me fine for probably close to a year.

Actually on Good Eats (the show that gave me the idea) that's what they did with this machine, they made jerky. The salting may have something to do with it but he does make jerky. How much does a 4 tray Nesco American Harvest dehydrator retail for and how much can it process in 24hrs?
Recipe from http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_31151,00.html
" AB takes a loving look at an ancient food for the new millennium: beef jerky. How to shop for it, make it with a window fan, and then how to actually cook with it as an ingredient. (foodtv.com)"
Quote:
1 1/2 to 2 pounds flank steak 2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce 2/3 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 teaspoon liquid smoke 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Special Equipment: 1 box fan, 4 paper air-conditioning filters, and 2 bungee cords
Trim the flank steak of any excess fat, place in a zip-top bag, and place it in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours in order to firm up.
Remove the steak from the freezer and thinly slice the meat with the grain, into long strips.
Place the strips of meat along with all of the remaining ingredients into a large, 1-gallon plastic zip-top bag and move around to evenly distribute all of the ingredients. Place the bag into the refrigerator for 3 to 6 hours.
Remove the meat from the brine and pat dry. Evenly distribute the strips of meat onto 3 of the air filters, laying them in the grooves and then stacking the filters on top of one another. Top these with 1 empty filter. Next, lay the box fan on its side and lay the filters on top of it. Strap the filters to the fan with 2 bungee cords. Stand the fan upright, plug in and set to medium. Allow the meat dry for 8 to 12 hours. If using a commercial dehydrator, follow the manufacturer's directions.

I'm not saying it wouldnt work, but I'm saying the dehydrator would do it quicker. You can do 4-8 ounces dry in 24 hours on my dehydrator, if at 12 hours you remove the dry ones and rearrange them..thats 40-80 ounces wet, so like 3-6 pounds wet in 24 hours.
Steak is not mushrooms, there is alot more water in mushrooms then in steak, and if I wre to slice the mushrooms thin like you do beef jerky, then of course they'd dry in only a couple hours, were talking whole mushrooms, average 15-20 grams wet each, much larger then a thin slice of steak. You cant compare how well it makes beef jerky, were not making beef jerky. You are making a dehydrator without heat, how can you possibly expect it to be as efficent? I mean simple physics should tell you warm air holds more moisture, so the air blowing over mushrooms if warm will remove the moisture faster...

In the show he says the exact opposite about warm air I think, take a look at the Episode. TORRENT: http://www2.digitaldistractions.org:8080...20Jerky.torrent

The way it works is something like freeze drying. Freeze drying manages to remove moisture from foods with moving allot of air over a product in sub freezing temperatures. Because the air is dry and moving very fast across the product it takes allot of the moisture. This results in less damage to the product which is a plus because you are not heating it up to high temps.
You will find if you look up Antarctica that people refer to it as the driest place on the planet. It is considered a Desert.

So how is this like freeze drying or subfreezing temperatures? As far as I saw you mentioned nothing of temperature, which means your working at room temperature.
