well, have you ever seem people in a situation like this...
firs they think they are to blaim for something, like someones death, and then they feel bad for it, later it turns out someone else is to blaim, and the reaction is: "pheeew, I'm so relieve, I thought I killed him" and the emotion of joy accompanies this revelation. The dead person is still dead, damage is still done.
So everyone just cares that they don't have to carry the burden of the deed.

You mean what? Indulging in remorse of course. (rhymes ) . I believe humans often think that they are more important than they really are. (I do it all the time). Remorse for ones past actions could be seen as a form of indulging in self importance.
