Show me one documented legal case where a person "got off" because they refused to state their name. Did you even bother to read the Hibel-SCOTUS case?
That argument is completely absurd if you follow it to it's logical conclusion. Murderers and rapists would be able to get off simply by refusing to state their name.

I always respond in a gentle demeanour of nothing's amiss. I explain what i'm doing (smoking a joint, and going home). Then brace myself for a ticket. It hasn't come yet.
I grew up in Parksville BC.
Actually, i'm pretty sure the RCMP have alot more power than we think. They can arrest you without telling you why, but i don't know if they can search without a warrant. I think alot of canadians believe we have that right because they do down south, but i think the RCMP can do it simply by having reasonable suspicion. I've heard of kids being searched against their wishes.

If i know i'm busted, i act cordial, polite. just be like. Well, you got me. You gotta do your job. this response has got me let off on more than one occasion. If they haven't busted you yet, be completely confident. Your not doing anything wrong. In fact your polite, but slightly inconvienienced, and just alittle impatient. You never ever ever concent to a search.

A lot of searches are done because of your demeanor.
If f you take lilbilski4life approach....im getting out of my car and say "wthat the fuck do u want mother fucker".....your gonna get fucked with by the cop.
Not the cops fault either.
You get out of the car like that, and the cop is going to suspect that your up to something, and will give you much shit.

Do you actually say that they got you? Because if the officers decide to press charges that can and probably would be taken as an admission of guilt, and that might work against you in court...
I would think a better approach would be exactly as you say, just minus the admitting you're guilty or did anything wrong part.

If you are driving a vehicle, you have to give your identity or you will be arrested. This is true in all states, IIRC.
It is only when you are NOT driving a vehicle that you are usually not required to give your name in most states.
So if you're just walking down the sidewalk and a cop asks for your name, you don't have to give it in most states, but if you are pulled over and you're the driver, prepare to be arrested for refusing.
