news from NH

In case any northeast hunters were wondering. Black trumpets have just started popping up. It is hard to tell from the pictures but I'm willing to guess that Craterellus Fallax, Craterellus Cornucopioides, and craterellus foetidus, can and will fruit in the same areas at the same time, sporeprints would be needed to specifically id these, but i don't find it nescessary since they all taste the same and smell absolutely divine.
I will also note that these were found scattered at the base of living oaks that are relatively fifty years old. the area used to be a field at one point in time, and receives ample amount of morning sun and afternoon shade. My other areas that are in completley wooded areas have barely started yet, one here one there. These are relatively small in comparison to what will be growing, 2-4 inches tall. I'm not sure if this is becasue they were in a relatively open area and receive more sun, or because it is early yet. the trumpets around here can grow very large if conditions are correct 8-10 inches or more. They are also extremely pungent, earthy smell. If I needed to compare them to others out there. they get to be about the size of california trumpets except for the pinkisih ochre spore surface, and smell even more richly than Bulgarian trumpets. I digress, and I'm going out picking. have a good day- norm

about 1.5 pounds given to the land owner (just for good karma)

it doesn't really show but the ones on the right are more pink than ochre

so I went back out yesterday, and checked a couple of trumpet spots that i rememberd scouting last year. All three spots were fruiting, and though they are small patches I was able to pick two pounds. It may not sound like much, but it takes alot of those little buggers to make a pound. The ones i found though are different than the pictures above. Much more delicate and not as strong smelling. The pore surface was also a buff grey color. I would have taken pictures but they never made it home. Stopped off at the restaurant that has been buying everything I pick (cash) and he was estatic.
I also picked about a half pound of yellow foot chants. He wanted those too, but i didn't sell them. I'm only 99% sure that's what they are. I won't sell unless I'm 100%. I was thrown off by the variations in cap color. I know I'm picky but i'd prefer not to kill anyone. I also think theyy cook down to nothing and don't taste that great. However they will go great in the dry mix I have been putting together.
One more note before I head out picking, today the northeast is hot and muggy, i can actually see it in the air. The weekend should be beautiful. Get out there hunting, hiking, whatever. You won't be dissapointed, mushrooms are evrywhere. (very good year here)
I just realized this post is now probably too long for most people to read. have a good day -norm

$15/ pound. thirty bucks. Pays for gas and smokes. barely.
If a person wanted to make a living picking mushrooms in the North east. I would recommend getting at the very least a part time job. Spend about five years scouting out small patches, and then pray for a good year. Though there are lots of mushrooms here, finding a "motherload" is fairly unlikely (except for Matsi's)
Psciclops: I'm not sure if you would really want my life. Broke my leg in Jan. Have a chunk of steel holdig my leg together now. Had to quit my job (at a mush farm) and now spend seven days a week roaming aimlessly around the woods, bitching about my leg and cursing out mosquitos. (they are the size of birds here)
In my free time I have designed a mushroom farm. it is 60' x 100' and will produce up to 4000 pounds per week. I'm going to texas next wed. to meet with an engineering firm. They will be making blueprints of my design and helping me answer some of the more technical questions. All for free. Not too bad, they owe me a favor.
I will probably miss the peak of trumpet season.
This farm I have designed will be in Maryland if the investors I found like my proposal.

It's too nice outside for me to sit on the computer, Have a good day everyone.
If anyone one wants to talk about my farm design, I will gladly answer questions, but I will start a new thread in gourmet and medical and not hunting- cheers
