The benifits of straw??
    #4494563 - 08/04/05 01:07 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I am basically following the bulk neglect report and I am just wondering if I have to use straw. What are the benifits of adding straw as opposed to just using straight poo?

Are you using weathered horse poo? If so, then forget the straw..maybe add in 10-30% chunky verm to the poo to fluff it up a bit and let it hold more moisture. If your using cow poo (I hope its not store bought) then the straw adds fluffiness and good fiberous texture, coir can also be used (and verm of course).

Thanks. I am using what I am to believe is either aged horse poo, or a mixture of cow/horse poo. It was purchased from a local garden centre and is sold in black garbage bags. It is not the processed stuff like you would buy at home depot. The owner told me that it is just bagged up from thier stables after sitting out for a while. So, this would be okay then to use straight?

Erm.... sounds like the owner wanted to sell some bags of shit... but I could be wrong. You'll need to give a full description with a picture though. It should be dried, you should see alot of fiberous texture, it should not look like dirt, you should see alot of what looks to be shreaded half digested straw (thats what it is ) and it should not be a black color, but a dark brown color. Anything else, doesnt sound perfect...but it may work. Its hit and miss if you buy a bag though, you get what you get, may be good, and it may be shit.

straw is used for bulk, mycelium races through it quickly (an added benefit).
w/ horse manure it isn't necessary, but if you use cow manure something should be added for roughage.
rye grass seed and verm. will also work, but straw is cheaper.

Unfortunatly I can't take a picture at the moment, my camera is not here. However, it looks like how you explained it should look like in your second post scat. Thank you!
