casing

Its my first attempt at shrooms, and im hopin of using a casing. but all i have is vermiculite, so it would be a casing of 100% vermiculite. would this work? also, how would i sterilize it, i got a small pressure cooker which would only be able to hold 2 1/2pint jars at a time, and thus no were near enough to fill up the trays i got. atleast not tonight... is there another way?

Vermiculite will work fine, it can just be a little more difficult to get the water content right. If you pay attention to what your doing though, I am sure you will be fine. You don't HAVE to sterilize your casing because you can pasteurize them. Moisten it, then put it in the oven on warm, or around 160 and keep it there for an hour, then case. Make sure your casing layer is light and even :smile:

Yes it does work :thumbup: this is how i sterilize casings put the verm in an aluminum foil tray cover with foil sterilize at 350-400f in the oven for 3-6 hours leav it overnight. wet the verm till damp put it ontop of your sub about 1/3 - 1/2 inch. wait for 2-3days then birth. presto  :mushroom2:

I just sterilise mine in the microwave for 10mins, make sure u added water already thou :wink:
I havent got a contam to date, touch wood.
