The Grain Icon
    #4493342 - 08/04/05 12:26 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

Okay...I understand it's for a good cause.  But hanging it up there like mistletoe as some sort of reminder to click on all these websites.  Come on.  ESPECIALLY for supporters.

But, regardless, people come to this site for information about psychedelic mushroom cultivation, edible and gourmet cultivation, socializing with like-minded people, and the other forums' interests as well.

PLEASE.  Make it a sticky in a given forum.  I really don't understand why it's there on EVERY SINGLE PAGE.  It is utterly superfluous to the intention of this site.  Quite simply, it SHOULD NOT BE THERE.

Charity is fine.  I don't understand why it MUST be put there for all viewers, irrespective of one's motives for coming to the site.  I can understand banner advertising.  Of course.  BUT FUCK ME I CANNOT ABIDE THIS GRAIN.

Big dubble

Somebody fucking rethink this one.  This smacks of the superficial pubist "shine on good vibe" trite SHITE that adamist, of late, so clearly proved is nothing but saran wrap on a slit belly.

I trust the admins to do the rational thing here.  Thanks.

I disagree. It's (arguably I suppose) there for a good cause, or several. Does the presence of a rather small icon trouble you that much? It's not like every pageload prompts a pop-up to the donation page. THAT would be overkill. This icon doesn't flash, doesn't play sounds, isn't absurd or obnoxious.. and if it actually WORKS, great.

My point is that it is right next to where you look for your PMs and has nothing to do with the purpose, as intended by the founding admins, of this website. It's an eyesore as it's totally irrelevant to mushrooms and placed very conspicuously. ESPECIALLY if you prefer darker backgrounds.

Seriously. This is not a charity site. Why do I have to see the damn thing everytime a page loads? It's annoying.

WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE TO CLICK IT AT A SITE DEVOTED TO MUSHROOM CULTIVATION?

Then we ought to have a taskbar of icons: Cancer, AIDS, landmine victims, NAACP, ACLU, persecuted Christians, Manatees R US.

Fuck that, man.  This site IS NOT about charity clicks.  Get it away from where my username is.  It's misplaced.  And that's assuming it should placed on a user's forumlist/forum page at all.

Fucking ghey.

You definately don't HAVE to click it. Perhaps they could remove it from the supporter accounts if a portion of your supporter fees went towards the charities? I know you're unwilling to support anyone other than yourself, but apparently someone in charge is and thinks it's a good idea. Deal with it, it's just one small icon.

Yes.  And how the FUCK do I get it off?

This is really a principle issue.  The shroomery should not guilt trip users into clicking on that icon, making people wait for the "charity click sites" to load, then click the first one, just to make the damn thing go away.

I've said my piece.  I'm saying that this is extraneous to this site.  TOTALLY uncalled-for next to a user's name.

Do the Shroomery admins want to ally themselves with pop-up ad artists?  Because that's the mentality--given the ostentatious display of the grain icon--that you all are falling in line behind.

COME ON.  Wake the fuck up and slap your stoned hippie generosity instincts in the cracked mirror.  THIS ICON IS MISPLACED.  I UNDERSTAND THE SENTIMENT.  BUT IT IS MISPLACED AT THIS SITE.

I think the banners are a lot better idea, too.

Thanks.

This just strikes me as a perfect example of what the conservative right lampoons the left as being: fantastically ideological, using convenient modes of behavior to make themselves feel better, but, really, not doing much in reality.

And forcing the shit on other people who want no part of it.

So if you were walking thru a forest, and you had the coice between home, a lake, a forest, a field, and a briar patch?  Which would you choose?

YOU ALREADY KNOW THE WAY.
Just don't click it.
the extension redstorm mentions is awesome..
IMO, Firefox is the best browser availible.
It's open source, it doen't catch nearly a tenth of the virus'......
the extensions are the shit.

Or just don't click it.  It's not all that prominent.  It's just a freakin symbol.
And clicks are easy.

Dude, seriously. What is the problem here? Maybe this smacks of 'hippie shit' but these sites can make a real difference and you'd realize that if you bothered to read up on the progress they've made. How is this superfluous to the purpose of the Shroomery? Are you saying we're somehow not part of humanity or the environment? What I want to know is why you're so opposed to spending ten lousy seconds to help these worthy causes. You really think it's more important to read another tubgirl thread in OTD than to feed some starving children or preserve an endandered species? That's fucked up man and I think you should reexamine your priorities. I don't care who you are or what your story is, there isn't any excuse not to help out when it's so quick and easy to do.

I especially like how you accuse us of forcing our members to support these sites. Last I checked, visiting the Shroomery was an entirely voluntary process. If you have some sort of issue with the causes we choose to support or the way in which we do so, you are free to take any number of remedies up to and including not coming here anymore. The 'click for charity' image disappears once you visit the link or if you disable ads in your supporter preferences. Anyone who still manages to find it offensive might be out of sync with the standards of decent and civilized society and not the other way around.

I can't force you to take an interest in charity or to care about anyone other than yourself. If you gain some kind of fulfillment through being selfish then that's your deal and so be it. Still, if I were you I'd find it embarassing to publicly exhibit such unfeeling disregard for the welfare of others. I hope if you are ever in a position of needing assistance that you find more understanding and generous benefactors than yourself. :nonono:

Oh for fuck's sake.  Clicking the damn thing doesn't suddenly make a person a benefactor to the world's poor.  And refusing to click it and bringing the issue up doesn't suddenly make me unable to see beyond myself.  Christ.  And I don't give pennies to every Salvation Army bell ringer I pass.
But, I have adblock now.  So problem solved.

I really wish that there was some way to turn it off. I opened it once and I won't open it again. For those of us who won't use it I feel that there should be a way to remove it.

btw... I was coming to this forum to start a topic about removing it.

I use firefox and I dont have that right click option about blocking, only a "block images from shroomery.org" thing which takes everything else out. I have not searched for an extension though.

I agree, this thing is a nuisance, but sometimes you gotta respect what others believe in and go with the flow. Anyways, once you've download the newest Mozilla, you must get the adblock extension for it. Then the right-click ad block option will appear.

It's #4 on this page:

That's exactly what just happened, as it worked but an hour ago.  Now it doesn't.  Forget the ad block thing now.   :mad2:

Well if you have a supporter account, Yathan said you can turn off ads and it doesnt show up, so check your preferences. Maybe it does anyway, and it doesnt solve if you dont have a supporter..I dunno, it was annoying to me ther first day, now it just looks like a logo, whatever, I can ignore it easily enough..

nope. they randomly change the image name, so it cant be adblocked - which I think is very childish. Some people dont want to be guilt-tripped everytime they load a page on the shroomery and they should have the option to block the image in their browser as they please.

Question: what percentage of mind media's and the shroomery's sponsors income goes to charity? just curious.

Here's some info about the percentages
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4486454#Post4486454

I lost the icon for that thing earlier with the adblock extension. I don't know if I blocked all the possible names for it or it just stopped changing, but its gone now. :]

I've noticed the phrase "guilt-tripped" used several times in this thread. This makes me wonder- why do you feel guilty?

If you honestly don't care about the plight of those the board is attempting to support, the icon should be nothing more than a minor annoyance. If you actually feel guitly for not doing your part to help others, there's a simple solution for that.

Requesting to have the icon removed solely to avoid feelings of guilt is quite a reflection of character. Although I do agree that if the site places charity links and expects the members to use them, it should donate some of it's revenue as well.

did I say I feel guilty? no.

do the admins want us to feel guilty for not clicking away? yes.

that is what guilt-tripping means.

I think the icon is more annoying that anything and just another example of "feel-good activism". I'd rather see Mind Media and its Shroomery sponsors donate real money rather than guilt-trip members into clicking away (which probably does not amount to anything, really - sorry to be the skeptic here). If world-hunger could be solved by "clicking," then there would be no starvation. Real donations on the other hand...

Considering that many people use proxies to access these boards, having the icon always present is useless - their "clicks" do not count anyway.

I have no problem with this click-charity. I do have a problem with the childish scripting that prevents users from having the discretion to see the icon in their browser or not.

Actually, on further research, I do have a problem with CharityUSA LLC and so should the Shroomery.

Woah, bi0, you have officially switched me over to the anti-grain side.

I don't have a problem with having a grain icon pop up, but I do have a problem with it being RIGHT WHERE THE PM ICON IS. We all know you put in that exact position because you know we would look at it thinking it might be a pm or something. Please move it to the very right of the screen or something.

And it does not take 10 seconds... even on DSL a single page for one of those charity things takes about 30 seconds to load all the fucking advertisements, and there are 5 charities you have click on.

I'd like to know how much money each charity actually gets from a click, 2 cents? maybe 5?

Read through the links I posted - they will explain why CharityUSA LLC is a fraud - nothing but smoke and mirrors.

I don't click on off-site links,
but I know a lot of people do,
why not just have links to well-researched charities
on the page with all the other off-site links...

that way you can give members the option to donate
and make sure the donations are going to the right place,
places that the Shroomery staff deem appropriate.

that's a fantastic idea; reputable charities are way better of an idea than a simple point and click operation.

MAPS.org is definately a site worthy of being on that list as well (as it is within the scope of this site)

Alright guys fair enough, I'm embarrassed that I didn't read about any of those problems when I was researching the charities. I guess I'm not immune to confirmation bias or maybe I was just too stoned to work Google. Anyway bi0 I appreciate you looking out for your fellow members, and Bobo I still think you're a bitch . If nothing else maybe this got people thinking about how lucky we are compared to the average citizen of the world, and what moral obligations (if any) stem from this position of privilege.

-Y

BTW, if you're heartbroken about not being able to click for charity anymore, allow me to suggest your pursue the Christian Children's Fund, the World Wildlife Fund or the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

 no worries man.

anways, I already donate to MAPS regularly. Perhaps the Shroomery could set up a way for users to donate cash & it would be collected periodically and given to MAPS (or other organizations). I think most members would support this and it would be excellent PR for the Shroomery.

for those unfamiliar to MAPS ~~> www.maps.org

cheers.

May I AGAIN suggest:

Shroomerites pooling cash to buy goats. GREAT gift, keeps on giving. They had a woman on NPR awhile back that was a product of a "goat" village--she went on to study in college with scholarship in the US because she as able to attend school early on because of the goat.

It sounds retarded, but, this is a real impact on people that are hungry and without much.

If the Shroomery is to give anything, it best be a fucking cow.

but that direct intervention is amazing.  Something to culture and feed off of.....it's perfect.  Especially if the clans were supported by a freakin Lab( a GREAT non-profit idea, if anyone ever thought of it) to ensure that their minimal herds breed as well as possible.
Supporting things like this and genetically altered crops (to the specific local conditions) would provide FAR more long term impact than the grain lifts and such i keep reading about.
Why is this being ignored as a long term solution by world governments is beyond me.
At least put the money to some use....village irrigation systems...herds.....etc

I dunno.....i don't agree with the initial complaint (shit's easy to ignore/deal with, and no harm is involved) i do think that if we as a community decide to help someone, it should be certain.
Maybe put a majority of supporter funding towards aid to people in desperate straits?

We could support someone much better than this idea, even if it were legitimate and effective.  A non-profit relation of MindMedia perhaps?

A good PR move as well, assuming the company ever gets investigated for any reason.
