Here's some info about the percentages http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4486454#Post4486454
I lost the icon for that thing earlier with the adblock extension. I don't know if I blocked all the possible names for it or it just stopped changing, but its gone now. :]

I've noticed the phrase "guilt-tripped" used several times in this thread. This makes me wonder- why do you feel guilty?
If you honestly don't care about the plight of those the board is attempting to support, the icon should be nothing more than a minor annoyance. If you actually feel guitly for not doing your part to help others, there's a simple solution for that.
Requesting to have the icon removed solely to avoid feelings of guilt is quite a reflection of character. Although I do agree that if the site places charity links and expects the members to use them, it should donate some of it's revenue as well.

did I say I feel guilty? no.
do the admins want us to feel guilty for not clicking away? yes.
that is what guilt-tripping means.
I think the icon is more annoying that anything and just another example of "feel-good activism". I'd rather see Mind Media and its Shroomery sponsors donate real money rather than guilt-trip members into clicking away (which probably does not amount to anything, really - sorry to be the skeptic here). If world-hunger could be solved by "clicking," then there would be no starvation. Real donations on the other hand...
Considering that many people use proxies to access these boards, having the icon always present is useless - their "clicks" do not count anyway.
I have no problem with this click-charity. I do have a problem with the childish scripting that prevents users from having the discretion to see the icon in their browser or not.

Actually, on further research, I do have a problem with CharityUSA LLC and so should the Shroomery.

Woah, bi0, you have officially switched me over to the anti-grain side.

I don't have a problem with having a grain icon pop up, but I do have a problem with it being RIGHT WHERE THE PM ICON IS. We all know you put in that exact position because you know we would look at it thinking it might be a pm or something. Please move it to the very right of the screen or something.
And it does not take 10 seconds... even on DSL a single page for one of those charity things takes about 30 seconds to load all the fucking advertisements, and there are 5 charities you have click on.
I'd like to know how much money each charity actually gets from a click, 2 cents? maybe 5?

Read through the links I posted - they will explain why CharityUSA LLC is a fraud - nothing but smoke and mirrors.

I don't click on off-site links, but I know a lot of people do, why not just have links to well-researched charities on the page with all the other off-site links...
that way you can give members the option to donate and make sure the donations are going to the right place, places that the Shroomery staff deem appropriate.

that's a fantastic idea; reputable charities are way better of an idea than a simple point and click operation.
MAPS.org is definately a site worthy of being on that list as well (as it is within the scope of this site)

Alright guys fair enough, I'm embarrassed that I didn't read about any of those problems when I was researching the charities. I guess I'm not immune to confirmation bias or maybe I was just too stoned to work Google. Anyway bi0 I appreciate you looking out for your fellow members, and Bobo I still think you're a bitch . If nothing else maybe this got people thinking about how lucky we are compared to the average citizen of the world, and what moral obligations (if any) stem from this position of privilege.

BTW, if you're heartbroken about not being able to click for charity anymore, allow me to suggest your pursue the Christian Children's Fund, the World Wildlife Fund or the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

no worries man.
anways, I already donate to MAPS regularly. Perhaps the Shroomery could set up a way for users to donate cash & it would be collected periodically and given to MAPS (or other organizations). I think most members would support this and it would be excellent PR for the Shroomery.
for those unfamiliar to MAPS ~~> www.maps.org
cheers.

May I AGAIN suggest:
Shroomerites pooling cash to buy goats. GREAT gift, keeps on giving. They had a woman on NPR awhile back that was a product of a "goat" village--she went on to study in college with scholarship in the US because she as able to attend school early on because of the goat.
It sounds retarded, but, this is a real impact on people that are hungry and without much.

If the Shroomery is to give anything, it best be a fucking cow.
but that direct intervention is amazing. Something to culture and feed off of.....it's perfect. Especially if the clans were supported by a freakin Lab( a GREAT non-profit idea, if anyone ever thought of it) to ensure that their minimal herds breed as well as possible. Supporting things like this and genetically altered crops (to the specific local conditions) would provide FAR more long term impact than the grain lifts and such i keep reading about. Why is this being ignored as a long term solution by world governments is beyond me. At least put the money to some use....village irrigation systems...herds.....etc
I dunno.....i don't agree with the initial complaint (shit's easy to ignore/deal with, and no harm is involved) i do think that if we as a community decide to help someone, it should be certain. Maybe put a majority of supporter funding towards aid to people in desperate straits?
We could support someone much better than this idea, even if it were legitimate and effective. A non-profit relation of MindMedia perhaps?
A good PR move as well, assuming the company ever gets investigated for any reason.
