utopian hell?
    #4491274 - 08/03/05 08:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Whatever will they think of next? I've been so bored I've been talking to "Volvobot", a thing that you add to MSN and it talks to you, very extreme advertising technique, this is the future everyone, who'd have thought a 100 years ago we'd find ourselves talking to AI, for worrying lengths of times rather than other humans? And then I got talking about science fiction, and someone was telling me about this Ian Banks book, set into the future, in a world where technology that we had created had advanced far beyond our mental capacity, to the point where they looked after us, did everything for us, so that we could live in complete comfort without ever having to worry about anything. A utopian society, basically. But there is a group of people who oppose this in the story, as they believe it has taken the point of being a human away, they believe that fear, danger and spontaniety are all natural parts of living. And so I've come to this mental dilemma, and wondering which I'd prefer... Would you like to live in a world of self delusion, where you are never really at any risk, a life where you'd always be comfortable or would you prefer to life to be unpredicatable and dangerous? Hmm, maybe this belongs in more in S&P.

Uncontrolled, unmonitored, unguided society FTW. The Indians had it- 1 murder in over 300 years between 2 tribes. They lived perfectly in harmony with nature and everything around them, at peace with one another, just living life as it was meant to be. I doubt that a colony of the lobotomized could do better.

Plus, they had special places in the social structure for stoners- a mix between doctors and priests. It was the perfect system. (Going to live with the Hopi Indians soon, if that tells you anything:grin:
