what's your number babe....
    #4491126 - 08/03/05 07:49 PM (12 years, 22 days ago)

How old are you? And do you feel like your age? It's my step dad's 40th birthday today and it just got me thinking, I actually felt a sorry for him reaching that age, should I? Does older age make you more depressed or does it inspire you to chill out and stop taking life for granted as much? Is there a point where you stop taking life for granted? Does age matter :crazy2:

Stage 1 - Basic Trust vs. Mistrust

* Developing trust is the first task of the ego, and it is never complete.
* The child will let mother out of sight without anxiety and rage because she has become an inner certainty as well as an outer predictability.
* The balance of trust with mistrust depends largely on the quality of maternal relationship.

Stage 2 - Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

* If denied autonomy, the child will turn against him/herself urges to manipulate and discriminate.
* Shame develops with the child's self-consciousness.
* Doubt has to do with having a front and back -- a "behind" subject to its own rules. Left over doubt may become paranoia.
* The sense of autonomy fostered in the child and modified as life progresses serves the preservation in economic and political life of a sense of justice.

Stage 3 - Initiative vs. Guilt

* Initiative adds to autonomy the quality of undertaking, planning, and attacking a task for the sake of being active and on the move.
* The child feels guilt over the goals contemplated and the acts initiated in exuberant enjoyment of new locomoter and mental powers.
* The castration complex occuring in this stage is due to the child's erotic fantasies.
* A residual conflict over initiative may be expressed as hysterical denial, which may cause the repression of the wish or the abrogation of the child's ego: paralysis and inhibition, or overcompensation and showing off.
* The Oedipal stage results not only in oppressive establishment of a moral sense restricting the horizon of the permissible, but also sets the direction towards the possible and the tangible which permits dreams of early childhood to be attached to goals of an active adult life.

After Stage 3, one may use the whole repetoire of previous modalities, modes, and zones for industrious, identity-maintaining, intimate, legacy-producing, dispair-countering purposes.
Stage 4 - Industry vs. Inferiority

* To bring a productive situation to completion is an aim which gradually supersedes the whims and wishes of play.
* The fundamentals of technology are developed
* To lose the hope of such "industrious" association may pull the child back to the more isolated, less conscious familial rivalry of the Oedipal time
* The child can become a conformist and thoughtless slave whom others exploit.

Stage 5 - Identity vs. Role Confusion (or "Diffusion")

* The adolescent is newly concerned with how they appear to others.
* Ego identity is the accrued confidence that the inner sameness and continuity prepared in the past are matched by the sameness and continuity of one's meaning for others, as evidenced in the promise of a career.
* The inability to settle on a school or occupational identity is disturbing.

Stage 6 - Intimacy vs. Isolation

* Body and ego must be masters of organ modes and of the other nuclear conflicts in order to face the fear of ego loss in situations which call for self-abandon.
* The avoidance of these experiences leads to isolation and self-absorption.
* The counterpart of intimacy is distantiation, which is the readiness to isolate and destroy forces and people whose essence seems dangerous to one's own.
* Now true genitality can fully develop.
* The danger at this stage is isolation which can lead to sever character problems.

Erikson's listed criteria for "genital utopia" illustrate his insistence on the role of many modes and modalities in harmony:

* mutuality of orgasm
* with a loved partner
* of opposite sex
* with whom one is willing and able to share a trust, and
* with whom one is willing and able to regulate the cycles of work, procreation, and recreation
* so as to secure to the offspring all the stages of satisfactory development

Stage 7 - Generativity vs. Stagnation

* Generativity is the concern in establishing and guiding the next generation.
* Simply having or wanting children doesn't achieve generativity.
* Socially-valued work and disciples are also expressions of generativity.

Stage 8 - Ego Integrity vs. Despair

* Ego integrity is the ego's accumulated assurance of its capacity for order and meaning.
* Despair is signified by a fear of one's own death, as well as the loss of self-sufficiency, and of loved partners and friends.
* Healthy children, Erikson tells us, won't fear life if their elders have integrity enough not to fear death.

It frightens me that I'll be tunring 20 next, where has the time gone? It really does fly, If I make it to old age I really will be there in a jiffy, wondering where all of my time went undoubtedly. Probably looking back on a life of internet hermitdom...:lol:
I never imagined myself in this position when i was younger though...Weird.

when i turned 20, i had some fear tucked inside.
However, 21 brings something new to the table so i can accept it.
I know all about internet hermitdom. The internet is my main form of

18 was pretty good. Nineteen not so good. 20 was down right bad. 21 and the thrill was gone. 22 and I've about had it. I expect fortuna to spin my wheel in my favor once my 23rd year arrives. I need some vagina in my life.

I'm only a couple years from my 40th. I find that the older I get the less I care about it. Age is kinda irrelevant to me now. I can't shake off the hangovers as easy as I did 20 years ago but I still party like I don't care.

Don't feel bad for an "old" guy. He's probably having more fun than you can imagine! I never knew it would be this good when I got this old!!

I'm 24, but I feel like I'm 50.  That probably has a lot to do with the fact that between the ages of 14 and 24 I did a lot of

I'm 23, and I feel old in some ways and young in others. I think about a lot of academic subjects the way a 50-year-old college professor might think about them. But at the same time, I feel like I'm just now going through the whole adolescent rebellion/counterculture thing. I'd say I dress younger than my age.

I feel like the 20s are a time of being laidback, experimenting, growing with the world around you, becoming independent, getting smarter, doing everything in your own possible time. I just love being active and carefree.

When I get old I will be happy when I can look back and not regret anything and be proud of my accomplishments and paths I've taken. That will be cool.

I don't know about the kid thing heh!

And do you feel like your age?

I don't know how to answer that.  A lot of my friends were old men mentally at 25 to 30 (with well developed beer guts) and have held the same opinions and beliefs since, I continue to re-evaluate many things and try new things (as responsibilities will permit).  I also detest being out of shape - I have a sedentary job, which doesn't help.

No.

Not really.  There have always been ups and downs to life. I do take a longer view of things though and realize that bad times usually don't last (the same with good times).

Quote:

Is there a point where you stop taking life for granted?

That happened for me at fourteen years of age when I was nearly killed by a drunk driver while I was riding a bike.

Quote:

Does age matter :crazy2:

Of course, it matters when buying alcohol, it matters when trying to impress someone for a job interview, it matters when trying to score points with the ladies.  It also matters physically so it's important when you are younger to become physically active and STAY physically active.  It's a lot harder to get in shape than to stay in shape.  Some people get wiser with age, but a lot of them seem to hit a wall around 25 to 30 and never really wise up, they just resign themselves to their preconceptions of what an adult should be (ideas formulated in immaturity).
