Last night I was chilling on the balcony with some friends, smoking the last scraps of weed we had, when a mate came out with what looked like an ounce of really bushy, dark greenish-brown weed. He told us it was actually called Salvia, that it cost him $25 and the hippy chick that sold it to him (in an under-the-counter deal) told him it would "solve his inner question".

We thought that sounded pretty fucking cool, so we loaded up a few pipes and bongs, and smoked quite a fair bit of it. Some drunk friends got home and smoked maybe 4 or 5 bongs of it each. I looked at erowid, and it seemed to suggest the stuff was really strong, but all I got was a pleasant peaceful/calm high, with pretty clear thinking. I couldnt even tell if it was that stuff, or the weed I had smoked.

The guy who smoked just salvia and no weed said he enjoyed it, and it made him pretty confused, and the drunks said it just sobered them up.

So was it even salvia do you think? did we do something wrong? or was it just really poor quality?

Did it have a bad taste with acrid smoke? Calm clear thinking is what you get with very little salvia inhaled. When done correctly it can get really weird, like being transported to another world kind of weird.

Also there are different strenghts, like 10X 20X or even plain leaf. With plain leaf it is hard to "breakthrough" unless you inhale a lot of smoke quickly at a high temperature.

I really don't think you should have smoked it with out knowing what you were getting in to. (even though you didn't achieve the full effects)

Quite possible. Not everyone breaks through. You cant smoke it like weed. It will cherry and burn when you light it just a bit but you DONT take the lighter away like its bud, you need to HOLD the lighter there the whole time and ROAST it. Use a bong so you can get a large hit of smoke, then HOLD it in for 30 seconds. It takes some practice..

My only breakthrough on soalvia occured when I had smoked a bit of mj. MJ tends to intesify things for some people. It also made the fade-out of the experience take a long time.

I thing that everyone can eventually breakthrough on salvia. It's more complicated than simple dosage. It may take time. Something like MJ might potentiate the effects positively. I can't see alcohol having any positive effect on the experience.
