Infertile Mushroom Potency

I went hunting today, and found lots of shrooms that were either too young or too old to be worth picking. But i did find one gorgeous, fully mature cube in the middle of a fairy ring of pin-heads. I picked it and instantly noticed the striking white color of the gills. This cube, from the looks of it, was in the middle of its spore production phase. But the gills weren't even slightly brown; Amanita white, so i presumed it infertile. Id love to get a pic but i cant find my damned camera, so ill try and get a pic of it once it dries. My hypothesis is: if the mushroom's central purpose is to make spores and reproduce, and if it isn't capable of achieving that purpose, then it will be able to expend a considerable excess of energy on other important things, like self-defense (supposedly psilocybin).
SO, my question is: are infertile shrooms more potent than competent ones? has there been any testing done to prove or disprove this theory?

Hrmmm... I would be concerned that it wasnt a cubensis if the gills/spores displayed those caracteristics. Please dont die.

Its not as majestic when cracker dry, but the gills are still white-ish. Ill shoot it next to a regular cube of similar age for comparison. Apparently, no one on the shroomery has the information that im looking for.

Seems like a reasonable hypothesis. I have seen (or maybe heard) similar topics. I think you are on the right track. With the energy saved by not performing a given task (spores), the mushroom will revert that energy to other purposes:
(psilocin/psilocybin/beaocystis/growth)
The veil remnant had no color, I pressume.
I believe you that you know what you're doing.
Perhaps that means that you know of all the mushrooms that resemble Ps. Cubensis, as well? i.e. Mushrooms which look like Ps. Cubensis, but with white spores.
Waiting for those pictures.

Actually, i found several Lepiota near-by, but this is definently Psilocybe cubensis. And you are correct in presuming that the veil was colorless. White like the stem & gills. Really beautiful actually, i wish id gotten a fresh pic.

Thank you, I love my avatar too. Tool r teh pwn. Best band in teh w0r1d. Anyways, I did not say you dont know what you are doing! You may, in fact, be correct. Although, it is a very suspicious find. Heres what you do: Find a kid u dont like, feed it to him in a sandwhich (maybe grind up and mix with mayo or something? :P) and see what happens. JK about feeding it to someone tho. I dunno. Later.

You might be onto something Milk man. I know alot of cultivators pic their cubes befor the veil opens for more potent shrooms, and spores are a bitch to clean up.

Yeah it bruised blue, and it was well within the spore production phase of it's life. I actually did feed it to someone to see how strong it is, hes gonna report back to me in a few days. I warned him that i dont know how strong it is and to be careful. LouiseLouise tells me that hes had sterile shrooms before and didnt notice any extra pop though.

yeah, it would be. I think the whole mycelium is whack. I found another shroom in the same spot that has pale gills (its still making spores, just not very many it seems).

lol, no, that's not what i found. That has pink gills... It was definitely a cube. Actually, i found another sterile cube in the same area, and i got a pic of the gills. Ill update this thread with the pics when i get around to it. The strange thing about the second one is that its gills stained blue! Ive never seen that before, ever (probably because of the purple spore color, but still, ive never seen a cube with pale gills stain under the cap...)

Sterile fruits happen. They're not common, but they do happen. Kind of like an albino... Rare but it definately happens. If it looks like a cube without the color and stains blue, then I'd say it's probably a cube :P
