Drug tests - how come some many people have to do these?
    #4488822 - 08/03/05 09:44 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

It seems there are lots of people here who have to take urine drug screens. Why? I've never been asked for one, and would not expect to be.
I've had to take a test because
You may choose many
I'm in the army / navy etc
I'm on probation
I'm in rehab
Partner / Parents demand it
My company demands it
Other
I've never had to take a test

I had to take a urine screen recently for employment. This employer is actually a reference laboratory that does all kinds of tests, including urine drug screens. The screen was a preemployment one. To their credit, as easy as it would be for them to do random screens (having immunoassay equipment on site,) they do not.

It's an industry now. My father works for a large laboratory that does blood/urine testing for a number of things. Drug tests make up a huge chunk of their business now. They have salespeople going out to companies and giving them bulk rates on drug tests. If a company figures they will, through turnover and new staffing positions, have 500 jobs per year, they can pre-purchase those 500 drug screens very cheap. It's a booming business.

I had to take a piss test for my job. I've got enuff extra fat where I could lose 30 lbs to look good (damn beer). I had smoked a few days prior and sporadically through the previous month.

Drank a few gallons of water, coupled with a diuretic (coffee) to prepare myself. I fasted one day to burn my available brown fat. That morning I drank about a gallon of h20, took a strong multivitamin, a little bit of creatine, got rid of the first few morning pisses, and then caught it midstream. I passed. I should have failed.

This whole company drug testing thing is bs. I'm an intern at a commodities firm, and I had to take a test before I got the job. At the time when I got the job, I was smoking alot of weed everyday. Within a month of me being there, my boss told me that I was smarter and a better worker than the guy who had been there for 2 years, a non smoker. Go figure.

All the wrong people are being tested. They recently ruled in my state that firemen and paramedics do not have to be drug tested. WTF?? It seems to me that these are exactly the folks who need it. People who directly effect the lives of others should be tested.... firemen, paramedics, cops, lawyers, doctors, state and federal legislators, not some poor schmuck working in a factory for minimum wage.

Well, one way to look at it is that if you can't control yourself enough to pass a test that you know is coming (ie, preemployment,) then how mature are you?

Granted its not quite so simple, for instance, people using poppy tea for chronic pain or mj for cancer/aids.

I don't agree with drug testing, but I can understand employers' motivations for doing it. The logic is that a person who partakes of such illegals substances is a higher liability individual to have around.

I never had to take one until a few weeks ago for a pre-employment screen. Its lame, but i passed. They only do it that once, so im in the clear. Im gettin over minimum wage for an entrylevel job, so i guess thats the price you pay.

Quite frankly, I think that what an individual chooses to do in their own time is non of the business of the company (or of the law for that matter). We are never asked to refrain from any other activities before being employed, so why should we be asked to refrain from the use of drugs? Unless they can give a good solid reason as to why, I will never be employed by such a company.

By the way the reason why there is such a high number of major corperations and major employers testing is because the get government kickbacks for having a zero tolerance policy.

So testing for stuff like pot sucks, but I've mostly heard that testing for psilocybin/psilocin is nearly impossible unless your on it. Any thoughts?
