The ocean's possible demise? - Caulerpa Taxifolia
    #4488461 - 08/03/05 02:05 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Thank you PBS for constantly showing quality programming. I just watched tonight's NOVA, entitled "Deep Sea Invasion", and it was F-U-C-K-E-D. I'll summarize what NOVA told me.

The gist is, there is a plant called Caulerpa Taxifolia. There are OTHER plants very similiar to it in many oceans around the world, but this one is special. This one is different in that it's only environment until 1984 was aquariums, and that it grows completely unchecked, with nothing to stop it. Only one known organism feeds on it, and it's a slug. It has very special climate needs and cannot survive just anywhere. Not only does nothing eat this plant, but it is also very dangerous for two other reasons.

a.) It doesn't produce sexually. Just ONE cell contains all the plant needs to continue to reproduce. All you gotta do is touch anchor on the bottom, pull the anchor up, drive your boat away, and woops? You might have just moved Caulerpa to somewhere else, waiting for someone to do the same.
b.) It grows 1 inch per day.

and actually, c.) It can survive in really cold water.

So basically, what we have here is a completely unnatural plant going apeshit in a vast ocean. Where did it come from? Apparently, it was the only algae that could survive in an aquarium, and so it was cultivated and spread throughout the world as the most popular aquarium decoration. Then by accident in France, it was let out into the waters directly beneath the museum it was located in.

The only thing that gets me is, how did the plant become the best aquarium plant? They didn't genetically engineer it (on purpose). It was IMPORTED from somewhere, and just happened to thrive really easily.

So..is it natural? It came from somewhere. But did it come from that place in it's current form, or was it just a robust species that became even more robust through years of captivation and then was accidentaly released back into the wild? Only time will tell.

At first I thought this was BS (no offence ), but a quick google search tells me that C.taxifolia is listed among the 100 "Worst Invasive Alien Species" threatening biodiversity.

fuck.

If worst comes to worst, other oceanic plants will simply be subjected to a highly competitive form of natural selection. Perhaps this highly successful plant will evolve and branch into the new generation of plants hundreds of thousands or millions of years from now due to its success.

Wow. Thats interesting how simple that plant reproduces. Too bad theres no way to use it for fuel or food.

Harvest a couple tons, irradiate it, then ferment it. BAM, ethanol.

edit: forgot to caramelize it... god i hate the food network. can't they just say "brown"??

Why aren't humans on that list? :smirk:

Personally, I'd be more worried about the TOXIC WASTE and SHIT we dump into the ocean, than some algae.

There needs to be a predator for this sort of thing.

What? We killed them all off for their expensive fat?

Damn.

There is defenitely no predator for this thing. It's the only one of the species of seaweed that produces it's defensive toxins in such insanely high amounts. Nothing can eat this weed except that slug, and even then..it's a slug. This stuff clones itself and grows 1 inch a day.

This species is most interesting. From my research I have done, I have found that a strain was plucked from the ocean somewhere in the Pacific near the Americas where it lived in homeostasis with the ocean. The strain was used in aquariums as a decorative plant. Sadly, the French aquarium dumped some of it into the ocean off the cliffs where it resides. The strain flourished in the new habitat as an invasive species and has begun popping up all across the Meddit. Sea.

Sad fact of the day:

This man was in charge of the aquarium at the time that this species was introduced into the ocean.

I can get into all sorts of bad stuff he actually participated in. He was really alot like the Nazi scientists doing tests on Jews during WW2. He acquired more information on the ocean than anyone ever before, but so did the Nazis about the human body. Anyways, he isn't my hero and I love the ocean and diving more than anything.
