dont wanna do casings.. but want to step up from cakes?
    #4488058 - 08/03/05 02:17 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

so you have cakes down.. casings might look intimidating, or you simply do not want to invest in more equipment .. or whatever the reason may be.

Well with some spawn bag action (or lots of jars) you can make a flat cake covered in verm that works nicely. the following pictures are from horsepoo that was spawned with a single SPENT WBS cake (went through 2 flushes and didnt want to do a third). I will soon have some properly done spawn bags of poo, wbs, and rye to do this with.

basically you just lay out the crumbled substrated (already colonized and after a 24hr dunk) ontop of a bit of verm and then you cover it with some verm. The foil tray works.. but i think something that "breaths" a bit would be better. maybe a screen, maybe tyvek, dunno This would definately help when used in the PMP design so that it can wick up water from the base.

If any of you are interested i could write up a little "tek" with picture tutorials being that i have a few more lined up.

freshly laid bed

huge pins.. probably a little past pins but yea

24 hrs later and its almost time for harvest

That tek sounds like a good idea. I know I'm looking for a better way to do cakes and I think it would helps out other newbs too.

I would definately be interested in reading a tek about this.  24 hrs from pins to almost full   sounds exciting

lol yer thats what i reakon, its not that much harder to chuck it into a casing container rather than let sit loose, im suprised u didnt get majority sproutin from the sides...
Casings arnt any harder than cakes, ppl gotta stop talkin bout them like u need a phd in mycology cos then it just puts newer growers off for no reason.
Only difference is makin up a casing layer. For one dont worry bout this ph buffer (this puts ppl off to start with), your unlikely to get 4-5 flushes so u dont need it. Later on down the track once u done a heap then u can experiement with it. And if u are worried just use a straight verm or 50/50 verm coir casing mix.
Chuck ya casin mix in the microwave for 10mins then throw it on ya broken up cakes when its cool and away u go.

Have a read of this if you havent, u dont need to know anything else to do ya first casing IMO. Casing Tek

Right on Ben! Too many newbees really do get all worked up over casings for nothing. Setting up jars for the PF Tek is harder than doing a casing. A casing is just a non-nutritious layer of stuff for your mushrooms to colonize and suck up water from. You could use freakin newspaper for a casing for God's sake! Sterilize your casing  and cover your colonized substrate with it. Keep it moist. Don't make it more complicated than it is. It's not rocket science. :smirk:

the only verm i applied was enough to make it look as if the whole thing was dunked and rolled.. nothing thick.  with casings you gotta get the RH right..  im sitting at 95+ rh here in my PMP

Probably has something to do with how quickly the myc. takes over the casing layer...

Basically a casing lol...D&R is basically casing

Im gonna agree with HC 100% on this one. That is definately a casing. and what are you talking about getting the RH right? afoaf's fruited casings everywhere from 88% to 99% rH without ever having problems. If you spent a little extra money and maybe a little extra time you wouldnt have any contam issues, and you'd get likely 4,5 maybe even 7 or 8 times the yield your getting on the current surface area of your casing.

Happy Trails and GL

So, if I try to fruit cakes in less then 95% humidity, do they cease to be cakes ?

How does not having the proper conditions change what it is ?

It's still a casing.

And that's not the only verm. you added, don't forget about the damp layer underneath. You know, that thing peeps like to do when making casings, lol.

ok ok.. so its a casing.. but its a damn thin one and it is the exact same thing as a dunk and roll cake.. just bigger. i just dont consider a 1mm layer of verm to be a casing layer

I've been reading a lot about cakes and casings since I'm new, and I really don't see too much of a difficulty increase between the two.

Just my opinion though.

Casing layer provides moisture to the substrate, Protection and (blank)...That's basically what you're doing.

It's just not as Extreme as Normal casing layers...That's all...

then the dunk and roll technique needs to be listed under casing  :tongue2:

Thats the point, is turning your cake into a casing. Thats why Magash came up with it, and DEC before that (Double End CASING) which is just putting verm on the top and bottom of the cake. Rolling, has to do with the sides, so your thing there isnt like a rolled cake, no verm rolled on, but its like the double end casing tek, except not in cake form, but flat (casing form).
