what does 150 proof mean

hi, when people talk about extractions (MG-seeds) the say they used 150 proof vodka or something else. what does the 150 proof mean?

in the usa, 151 proof means 75.5 % ethanol (so 190 proof is 95%, 200 proof is 100%, 80 proof is 40% EtOH...)

I think that proof is defined to be twice the weight of alcohol in the solution?

Ya half the proof is the alcahol percentage in booze

You guys are funny! Alchohol proofing actually had a very un-scientific start. They soaked gun powder with alchohol and the proof that allowed ignition in the musket was 100 Proof. pretty crazy but true. So 150 Proof i.e. Bacardi 151 is highly flammable stuff.

Yep -- you can blow huge fireballs with a jolt of Everclear -- 190 proof corn whiskey.

yeah, if you need etOH for extractions and such, Everclear is a good bet. Many moons ago, I found out the a-MT I had was not soluble in water. Had to go get some Everclear. Worked like a charm. It is hard to get any purer alcohol as it has to be chemically done (cannot be distilled past 95% about).
