"I love you!"
    #4485746 - 08/02/05 02:29 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Why is it nearly mandatory that when a lover (not a one-night-stand) says, "I love you!" you must reply in kind or face the wrath of your significant other?

Don't believe me? Try saying, "Yeah, whatever..." or "I wonder what's on the tube tonight", or worse of all - respond with silence.

Or how about Han Solo's famous response: "I know" !

If only we were all as suave as Han

I usually respond to the "I love you" bit with something like "I refuse to use a simple four-letter word to describe something as infinitely detailed as the way I feel about you."

Granted, I'm sure it takes a certain kind of girl to get to the stage of saying "I love you" to me and, as such, is usually prepared for my response :smirk:

I only say those words when I mean them.

I hear people saying that they love eachother and it makes me sick to my stomach because its just so fake. Rarely do people who use that word have any clue what it means.

they aren't. i just don't like to see people who have known eachother for 2 weeks say that they love eachother, because I feel that they are cheapening the word and cheating themselves out of the much deeper expirience of real love that goes beyond physical attraction provoked by brain chemicals.

And I especially don't like it when people use that word as an emotional weapon when they are trying to get something that they want.

And I don't like it when people say they love someone and then proceed to disregard that person's feelings as if they were a stranger.

none of these types of people that i mentioned know what they are talking about, IMO. And yet these types of 'love' dominate over the real thing. I really believe that 90% of the time that word is used, it is neither meant or understood by the people using and hearing it.

You have to be human to fully understand love, and sadly most people are more animal than human. The simply don't posess enough of a mental dimension to understand anything beyond physical attraction triggered by chemical impulses. They certainly don't have the willpower or integrity to practice the self-sacrifice and consideration for another being that real love requires.

With my current girl, I've done "I know." and "me too." with no ill effects. Hell, I can even get away with "Yup." if I say it right...

When I was involved and in love, hearing and saying "I love you" felt good. Then the exchange became habit. And, like most habits, a tolerance developed, meaning diminished, and eventually I found myself searching for a new high. Love is a helluva drug. The highs are so high, but just the opposite happens with the lows. I quit a little while ago and have been comfortably content ever since.

  I just found out (after all this time?), just after episode 3 came out, that the 'French' version of Han, transforms the name and spells it as:    Yan.

What does this have to do with "I love you"?

I just like how it is " known " too.

on most walls you will find triggers that turn on and off lights in the room. If you want to turn the light on, then you just switch the trigger, you don't ask yourself why does the trigger react like that.
Humans are collections of such triggers. Act accoarding to what reactions you want from them
