hydrating perlite in simple terrarium
    #4485711 - 08/02/05 04:19 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

i have a very simple FC, just a rubbermaid with perlite in it. there's quite a lot of perlite in there too, over 2" not quite three. well i poured a little over a gallon of distilled water into it just to see what would happen...and nothing did. it's still dry as a bone. i birth my cakes and casing tomorrow so it's very important i get humidity up. anyone have tips on using perlite, i.e. what it's supposed to feel/look like when it's optimal. Thanks!

Depending on what size terrarium you're using, you may have put too much water in. When I first set up my terrarium I put in way too much water. I took a turkey baster, jammed it through the perlite into the bottom and sucked out as much as I could. I only got a little at a time and it was a pain by but my rh jumped a lot. Do a search of other humidification posts, it seems that too much water makes it difficult for the perlite to put humidity into the air.

go to a pet store and buy a cheap humidity gauge to get an idea of the RH. or buy an expensive one 2 get the perfect reading.

before even adding your perlite to the FC you should soak it for a while, drain it off until it drips just a little then put it in your FC.
you will get your maximum rH from perlite done this way, leaving it in standing water is taking away from the evaporative surface area of the perlite. soak-drain-apply.
have fun
peace

if you over soak your perlite the easiest thing to do is dump it into a strainer, let the water sluice out, and then put it back in the FC. I put waaaay to much in and it was floating the perlite, drained the excess, and now 4 weeks later its still @ 97%

i just poured water in the perlite in a fish tank and mixxed it as i poured untill it felt nice and moist but without excess water , crumbled and spread out my failed mycobag (grw to bout 10% then stopped growing ) and then added a layer of peat on the top sprayed it down with 50 / 50 coffee and water and hope for the best =(

yeah you can just use tap water, especially if you have a filter on it. most (not all) bottled water comes from some PWS and is run through a series of filters to clean it up. evian=naive
i used it straight out of the tap when i was using the perlite and didn't seem to have any bad effects from it.
good luck
