Can you fruit wbs as cakes?
    #4485689 - 08/02/05 02:11 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Just curious...I'd love to see a pint size cake full of shrooms popping all out of it. If so will they grow in a closet that's in the upper 70's? I can't really find a way to make my room cooler, it's so small and warm but I figured the temp the closet might be a little lower.

Temp has nothing to do with it and temps are usually warmer in closets IME..if humidity is high, you can dunk and roll and fruit as cakes...they perform quite poorly though. Cakes are 2/3 verm, good at holding water. Hole seeds arent good at keeping water, or reabsorbing water.

I'll try to use the peat moss tek and place some hydrated/steilized sphagnum peat moss around the cake to give it more moisture.

If you leave the cake in the jar, wrap the jar in foil or something else that blocks the light and throw some casing mix on top, it should fruit. But like scat says, WBS doesn't hold water very well, so the underlying substrate may dry out quickly.

I've got some WBS pinning in a "cake," form right now. I just broke it intoa few pieces and put it in a little tub on top of some wet compost. It's looking ok so far. Probably not a big flush, but we'll see.

Well I've done countless hours of reading on the casings and the only things I'm worried about is not having a pH buffer and that I'll make it too wet. I've also read conflicting theories on whether or not the bottom layer needs to have water in it. Other than that I feel pretty good about breaking up the myc and adding the top layer. I already have a 10 gal aquarium and I can easily find something to case in. I'll give it a shot, I mean I'll most likely get SOMETHING right?

Dont use a bottom layer...just break up the WBS in a pan and put moist casing on top. You can even just use a thin layer of moist verm..maybe toss in just a smidgen of peat moss if you cant find a buffer..

I see what you mean, by lowering the moss content is a different way of adjusting the pH. Maybe a 70/30 Verm/Peat layer...sound good?

From my readings it sounded like peat moss, coir, and anything like that was vital to a casing. Will it hinder the yield size/quantity any or is it a safe bet?

I had trouble finding plain old peat moss around here. Walmart, k mart, and sears hardware only have stuff with miracle gro in it. My garden shop has been successful so far but I couldn't find any coco coir. I will definitely find some down the road though, I'll order it online if I have too. Next casing will probably consist of hpoo spawn and a coco coir casing layer.

Garden shops is not where you find coco coir. You find it in pet stores, like Petco or Pet Smart, in the reptile section, bricks called Bed A Beast, Eco Earth, or some such..for bedding. Instructions will be on it to add the brick to water.

You could use as little as 5-10% peat moss too, anywhere from 0-30% peat moss without a buffer should work ok..you can use just straight verm, like I said though I'd mix a small amount in..by also applying a thin layer you can help keep the pH higher too..

That too...not everyone has a hydroponic store near them though..Petsmarts and Petcos are closer (although coir from a hydro store will be cheaper, and you can find bales)

Its in as many pet stores as hydro stores..there are 4 pet stores in my area and 2 hydro stores, all of the pet stores have it, only one hydro store does. Hydroponic stores are not nation wide chains like the two pet stores I mentioned..those pet stores often carry the same stock because they're chains. In hydro, peat moss is often used instead of coir though..

Pet stores are also pretty gruesome to walk into if your empathic sensitivity is greater than a golf-ball's; I've had to make two trips to Petco setting up my TiT, and the place is a gulag. If I had to stay more than twenty minutes, I'd be physically ill.
