Redefining words on-the-fly
    #4485443 - 08/02/05 03:12 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

This is one of the great "sins" that occurs repeatedly on this board.

We all may laugh or turn up our noses in disgust or disbelief when Clinton says, I did not have sexual relations with Monica, she merely performed fellation on me."
Yet, this same ludicrous redefinition of words occurs here daily.

Rather than change oneself or admit that one was in error or (horror of horror) ACTUALLY learn something, some will instead weakly attempt to change the external by playing with words and commonly accepted meanings or by adding totally implausible constructs to their base theory that they just made up after one of their points was neatly deconstrcuted.

"Well using air to move a pinwheel is magical in and of itself and IS a form of telekinesis."

When fully cornered and trapped by the writer's own words, the final defense to be used is apathy, 'Well, I don't care what you think!"

Regularly using nonsensical escape clauses is just about the clearest sign that one is totally stuck in ego; otherwise what is there to defend?

It is also worth noting that many people will use a word without a clear knowledge of it's true meaning. I have done this before.

When I catch myself about to do that, I mumble.

That is a minor infraction and not in the same league.

Say two "Hail Mary's" and one "Our Father" and you are good to go!

Aren't the moderators responsible for keeping the threads on track ?
We would need 20 mods at least here
I often would like to see some real results and conclusion of a thread here. Perhaps they should be pinned in some kind of Walhalla of enlightening answers in an sub-board ?
I think the awesome doublepostings could be brought to a limit with that

edit: I think I misinterpret and redefined every word of this :dead:

Yeah at least when someone just doesn't know the correct meaning, it is usually due to an "innocent" oversight. When provided with the correct definition, they will usually see their error and make correction.

When someone changes their definition mid-argument on their own it is almost always because they feel their argument will benefit from a "tweaked" definition - which indicates active intent to use mis-communication in their argument. They aren't usually as willing to correct the error :frown:

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

If people keep communicating with the intention to understand where the other is coming from, it can get worked out. Often people do innocently choose the wrong word to fit the meaning they wish to impart or another chooses to innocently ascribe their own meaning until someone posts the dictionary definition. They should be allowed to graciously make the correction before discussion continues.

Communication and misunderstandings due to the limitations of the English language and peoples misunderstandings of dictionary definitions are bound to happen here. They can be cleared up with calm and patience.

If someone is just trying to be difficult or on the otherside, not meaning to understand the other person, then why bother furthering a discussion with them? The person who continues to bother discussing something with someone just trying to be difficult obviously has some "need to be right" ego issues as well. Both are at fault of that if the discussion digresses into total *mis-communication.

The need to be right is a human trait and it can have ugly results. Why do you think so many seek to become supra human and not give a shit about being right or wrong but just care to be?

edit typo. I meant to type mis- communication and typed just communication. That could lead to a huge mis understanding!
