Cardboard Tip For Cakes ..Which I Accidentally Stumbled Opon...
    #4484722 - 08/02/05 09:02 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hello fellow shroomers.

I would like to share an experience with you guys and hopefully it will expand and let you have a better mushroom growing experience.

This started out with a few birthed cakes.  I did not have perlite at the moment so I thought I would use damp paper towels for humidity.  I read somewhere though that too much water will drown the cakes.  So I put a piece of thin cardboard on top of the damp paper towels to shield the cakes from too much water, and set the cakes on top of the cardboard, which later became damp.

A few days later I noticed the mycelium starting to expand and grow on the cardboard!  Later I noticed the first flushes were near the base of the cake where it expanded all over the cardboard.  I also noticed that I can keep adding thin pieces of the cardboard and keep the cakes alive and flushing!

Since mushrooms are nature's way of recycling waste near stumps and on manure etc... what makes cardboard any different than old stumps and decomposing trees?  All cardboard is is paper...which you guessed it...comes from trees

I have not done this with anything other that the Koh Samui Super Strain.  So I am not sure if any other strain will work as well.

So this is a tip I thought was interesting to share.

Take care. :mushroom2:

I had many, many flushes and Koh Samui SS is only supposed to have 3.

I see that I did not stumble opon something new now that I see the related threads at the bottom. Haha...Oh well. Maybe some people that may not know about this may see it or something.

Laterz.

Wow this is advanced you think? I think Advanced should have a limit like the Growlogs, you have to have a certain number of posts before viewing it. The cardboard dint have anything to do with the cakes flushing more, and cubensis dont fruit off decaying trees or wood products well. Cardboard has been used as an agar substitute for starting spawn many times, and theres a tek for it in the FAQ. Mycelium and other molds will colonize it well, which is why its a bad idea to use cardboard in your fruiting chamber, because eventually you'll get mold. And its a bad idea to advise people to do so because they may get molds quicker then you as well.
