Ventilation for a large decorative fungal display inside a restaraunt?
    #4482335 - 08/01/05 08:55 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Say someone wanted to grow a 40 sq. ft display in an upscale restaraunt setting, what would be the ventilation options one could use to prevent violation of codes due to spore related issues?

I'm thinking of Reishi as the ideal candidate because of its long fruiting stage. Specimins would only be in the restaraunt if they were in the peak of fruiting. Another facility offsite would handle all the other stages of the life cycle.

Colonization and such. Or maybe you could show all the different stages, but devote most of the real estate to just this huge sea of shrooms.

That would be some high class shit.

I guess it comes down to whether to use a hepa filter, or to vent it outside. I think I would rather filter, but how expensive would it be keeping clean filters in it?

With either one of these (above), some PVC pipe & a little modification - it would not cost you much to rig a very high quality air filter system.

A lot of upscale restraunts already use hepa filters. So if
your display is not isolated from the restraunt it may be the
cost of them changing one of their filters more often.

No, but if you placed a small automotive air filter in front of it - as a prefilter, it would last - a long long time. Most of the better grade auto air filters are 5 micron.

I believe most spores are 3-10 microns, so yeah. That should work.

I guess all I need now is an attractive clear plastic cover, and environmentals.

Lead solder and glass would be nice.

What would be a suitable blower for those filters?

Great idea, I've thought about that before as well.

If I was doing it I'd probably make some nice columns out of glass or plexiglass, with a fan at the top sucking air out and venting it away, and a passive intake at the bottom.

You might run into problems with the glass fogging up with condensation. It depends how long you want to leave the shrooms in there. To have them in for a long time as in more than a day or two then you'd need to keep the humidity pretty high for them to keep growing which will equal condensation buildup. Maybe you could try to prevent it by increasing air circulation but pup in humidified air to prevent humidity getting too low.
