some more casing questions
    #4481352 - 08/01/05 04:43 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

My casings are finally starting to spit out mushies. however, one casing is growing in patches. one spot has a couple shrooms almost 2 inches and other places where there aren't even signs of pinning. is this natural and what can i do to make it more even? also instead of dunking the entire case after it flushes, could i just soak it down and throw it in the fridge then add sterilized verm. to it when its ready to be taken out? thanks for any help

It is more normal than otherwise to get patchy growth rather than a full flush of shrooms, from my own experience and from what I've observed here. The advice I've heard and tried for getting more even flushes is to make sure the substrate and casing are of consistent depth so that myc start to break through about the same time. Some recommend "patching" isolated myc with casing mix to let the rest of the casing catch up, but others dispute the need for that technique. I've tried with and without patching, and I haven't noticed a difference. I've gotten better flushes when I've been more careful about depth consistency, but I still get patches in most pans, especially after the first two flushes. Some pans/strains have only ever produced a few large fruits.

I can't comment about dunking because I don't do it. I do, however, thoroughly and frequently mist casings after harvesting a flush.

This is Keeper Creepers, a good flush but not totally covering the surface:

This is Orissa India, a few large specimens on this flush:

This is Orissa India with better coverage and more average-sized fruits:
